My surgery (TAH, BSO) on 9/14 went beautifully, as did my hospital recovery, so that I was able to come home yesterday. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to all the posts giving advice to walk, drink water and walk! I'm convinced that's what made it all go so well. The Dr. and nurses were all very impressed with the speed of my recovery - told them I read the good advice at Hystersisters.com :-)
Said I'd tell how it was - pre-op was the day before, so checked in, was taken to my room, visited with the Anesthesiologist, was taken to the pre-op holding area and sedated (I was already so relaxed I was half asleep). Next recollection is being in recovery and having to have a new IV because they weren't sure if the morphine wasn't doing it for me, or if the IV wasn't positioned correctly. Anyway, the Demarol did it, and though I was mostly awake I was rather cross-eyed that first day :-) Ice chips only for moisture. Used that IV pain med. button a good bit. And thank God for catheters! LOL
Day 2, catheter out, went potty, went walking, took a dry bath sitting on the potty (nurse washed my back, bless her)visited a little, walked some more, drank LOTS of water - who could have known it would taste SO good! After lunch the IV was taken out (freedom!) and I was good to go for a walk when DH arrived late afternoon. Took a pain pill to get a good night's rest.
Day 3, a shower (delicious), walked lots more, drank lots more water. Rested as much as I could. No pain whatsover other than a little burning from the incision down into my thigh when I walked. Did not take a pain pill for a good night's rest, but halfway through the night, wished I had. Not hurting, but not sleeping either.
Day 4, DH called early in morning - I asked if he was ready to spring me - said not till the warden okayed it LOL - warden did shortly after - what a NICE Dr. Came home :-) DH has been wonderful. I feel so well, I'm having to make an effort to not overdo things. Don't want any setbacks now.
So thanks, all you Sisters who went before. The walking and water I know helped tremendously. I think too that lying fairly flat in the bed helped - didn't have to make my legs straighten to walk; and expecting pain helped - after all the only way to kill all pain after something so severe is done to your body is to be comatose, and that's not helpful LOL. I suppose you could just lie there till your wounds healed, but then you'd have all sorts of complications set in, so that's not an option, either. So, in the real world, we grin and bear it for a little while, do what we can to ease things, and look to a wonderful future.
God bless, Sisters. May it go as well for all of you as it seems to be going for me - now if only I can be good and not try to do too much LOL. Patty
