Since 20/20's news show last Friday night I've been overwhelmed with email from our members. I received emails that were outraged at the audacity of the doctors interviewed who made blanket statements regarding all hysterectomized women.
We know, after 5 years online providing women to women support that his statements were not 100% true. We knew that his "always" statements were over-statements since we have seen the balance of experience within our support community. Women talking to women.
Facts:
Many women have hysterectomies. Most women recover well and with good health. Many women do not.
As with all surgeries, there is a risk of complications that we sign within paperwork when we enter the hospital. No matter the surgery, it comes with the risk that the surgery may not make us better, but worse.
At Hyster Sisters, we know these women. THey inhabit our forum called: The Road Less Traveled and deal with all kinds of long term complications.
At Hyster Sisters we also know the women who return after one year, two year, three or more to share their joy of good health and vital life with their families.
Truth is, although I thought 20/20 caused an uproar, I think its a good uproar. I know, I'm nutty.
But the fact is, this puts hyst in the news...the hot news. Medical doctors are going to get phone calls, questioned more and women are going for more opinions before agreeing to surgery. This is a good thing! SOmetiimes the pendulum has to swing way over to one side in order to swing back near the middle....besides, we want less surgeries, better treatments.
We don't want hysterectomies to be the number one surgery for our daughters and granddaughters.
We want better treatments and solutions to GYN problems and diseases. Give us those...to give us better health...and we will keep our uteruses and various parts.
Make women's health issues important to research. Give us more options. Give us better treatments.
And hopefully, my daughter (and yours!)will not need to make the choices I had to make leading to a hysterectomy to preserve her life and ensure her health.
Question your doctors. Get a second and third and fourth opionion. Ask questions. Go for the alternatives and options when you can. A hysterectomy is a forever surgery and there are no refunds for the uterus.
And we will all pray together, uniting our voices, asking for better research and healthcare for women and their GYN issues and diseases.
