Hello everyone,

I had my surgery on 9/14. I knew I was having a TAH but was not sure what incision I would receive (verticle or horizontal). This was a constant problem for me because I did not want the verticle incision.

I did pre-op a week before. They did blood and urine samples and an EKG which was abnormal and had to be approved by my PCP. I talked to the attending nurse and she answered all of my questions. These were questions the dr had already answered.

My surgery was scheduled for 7:45 AM and I had to be at the hospital at 6:00AM. I arrived on time with my mother and aunt. I got called in around 6:10 and was immediately sent to get ready for surgery. I waited from 6:20 until about 7:30 for my dr to come talk to me before surgery. It really went rather fast since I had my mother and aunt talking to me. My dr came to talk to me at 7:30 and told me I would be having a TAH with the uterus and cervix being removed. I told him I wanted the bikini cut and he said okay. (I had been told in the past my at least 3 drs that my uterus was to large for a bikini cut and I would need the verticle cut. I had also taken lupron which did not do much work).

I was wheeled into the area where they prep you for surgery (the green cap and the anesthesia (sp). The nurse who was going to be in the surgery with me came to talk to me and the anethesiologist (sp) came over. The anethesiologist told me I would be given a general. I was not given the choice of an epidural. He gave me novicane to numb the place for the IV. He gave me something to relax me right away before going into OR.

When I got in OR the dr came to me again and was talking to me. He asked if I needed to know anything else and I said, "IF YOU GET IN THERE AND DECIDE YOU CANNOT GIVE ME A BIKINI CUT - PLEASE JUST CLOSE ME BACK UP AND I WILL DEAL WITH THE PAIN" He said okay I could have the bikini cut and I was out.

I woke up to the anethesiologist calling my name and trying to get me to wake up and talk. I had to take a deep breath - which I did. The dr looked at me and said everything went fine and you have a nice bikini cut. He said I also had a cyst on my ovary that he removed. I said okay can I go to sleep now.

My surgery lasted about 1 1/2 hours. I stayed in recovery another 3 hours and was in my room by 2:30. I helped them put me on the bed. There was not a lot of pain. I was given pain meds every 3 to 4 hours. The worst pain came from that darn needle they came to inject my pain medicine from. Thankfully the next day the catherer and IV came out. All my medicines were given by pills.

The first day - I was given a liquid diet. I started eating the next morning. I had a bad case of gas. I walked around the halls, watched TV and slept boy was that great.

I thought I was going to have to come home with the catherer they put in the vagina for drainage but fortunatelly I did not. I stayed in the hospital until Sunday AM.

I have taken the pain pills when I have a coughing spell and sneezing fit.

I feel great.

So good luck to all you LIW and God Bless.

P.S. I am not in great shape to wear a bikini - I just thought with the pain gone maybe I could motivate myself enough to lose the weight to possibly wear a bikini - smile
