My trip to the castle was on 12/2/03. My DM went with me but, as much as she tried to argue, I wouldn't let her drive. I had to keep as much control over myself and my life as I could before going "under the knife". I was very calm in the pre op waiting room with my DM at my side. I think at that point she was more nervous than I. My pastor and his wife surprised me by coming to wait with us and assured me later that they would wait with my DM during my TAH. When they called me back to staging area I became very nervous. I changed into the lovely little gown and paper hat. The nurses came by and asked me questions and started an IV with an antibiotic in it. The next person to stop by was the "knock-out man". He was an older gentlemen and very nice. He asked me some questions and before I could finish answering them I started crying. He asked me if I was in pain or scared. I told him neither...I'm terrified! He told me if a patient isn't at least a little nervous it makes him worry. I told him he would be fine then because I had never been so scared!! The last person I saw in the staging area was my DR. He saw me crying and gave me a hug and told me he would take good care of me and to try not to worry. Then they wheeled me into the OR. There all the nurses and etc. were very concerned over how upset and scared I was. They tried to calm me and told me they really loved working with my DR because he was always so concerned about his patients. I must have started to hyperventilate because the knock-out man said he was going to give me some oxygen and a little time to calm down. Once I was finally able to stop crying he placed the mask over my nose and mouth and just kept talking to me in a very soothing voice. The next thing I remember is coughing and hurt soooo bad. They were telling me to breathe so I must have started coughing when they took to tubes out of my throat. They gave me something for pain and after a while wheeled me to my room. I really don't remember anything about that trip except the bumps into and out of the elevator really hurt!! Once I was in my room and into my bed (that was an experience in itself) I was ok. They hooked up my pain pump, handed my the button, and finally let me have some ice chips. I don't remember much else until the next am. The nurses unhooked the pump and removed the catheter, then told me they wanted me to sit up, get up and try to go pee. I managed to do all they asked but it took me about 45 mins. I started to lie back down but they wanted me to take a shower before I went back to bed. I really didn't think I could but managed to at least stand in the shower and somewhat wash my hair and self. Boy, I bet I slept 3hours after that ordeal. I stayed in the castle until 12/5/03 and each day everything got a little easier. I made many trips through the halls and was determined to do whatever I had to do to go home. Since I've been home everything has gotten a lot easier and I think I am well on my way to being the kind of woman I've always wanted to be. I'll be able to pick up and go without worrying about a surprise from Aunt Flo. I'll never have that horrible pain and pressure again!!!! I'm finally free to be me!!!!!!
