For two years I felt like the rug was slipping out from under me very slowly. My PCP put me on anti-depressants telling me that depression will make you feel tired and sluggish and since all of my pap's were normal, he had no reason to think anything else.
Finally last November I went to a new PCP who did blood work and suggested that since my periods were so heavy and long that I should see a gyn. I broke down and called my sisters gyn, a man (I always had preferred women) and found that I needed a hysterectomy. I was shocked. I am only 49 and he was telling me that he wanted to take everything. This can't be happening to me I told my husband. Just as I was thinking of demanding an ultrasound, the phone rang and it was the doctors nurse telling me to arrive at their office in a week for an U/S of my uterus. My husband and I went together and we again were in shock when we could see very clearly the size of the tumors. Did not have to have training to see those things. We knew it was necessary now and we scheduled my castle date.
On Dec. 17, 2003 I arrived at the castle at 1:30 P.M. surgery was scheduled for 3:00 p.m. After a bowel prep and clear liquids the day before, and NPO after midnight, I was tired, weak, hungry and scared to death. I was however in good hands. Within minutes the nurses had me in tears with laughter. I was taken to my room, shaved from front to back and all points in between. I was put in TED hose to reduce the chance of DVT (blood clots) in my legs, given cute little booties to put on my feet and had an IV started in my hand. Not bad so far I told my husband. He looked so worried and concerned. He is a heart patient and I think I worried more about him than myself.
After a short visit with my doc, I had a chat with my anesthesiologist, a quick breathing treatment (I had trouble with the last surgery due to asthma) and I was off to the O.R.
The last thing I remember in there, was telling my A-man that he was up to something and he said yep, goodnight Jerri.
When I woke up I was pleasantly suprised to find that while my tummy was sore I was not at all sick to my stomach nor did I have a sore throat. He was some kind of good to me.
I was in a small outpatient hospital that had only 2 overnight rooms so I had the best of care. The entire building after 5 contained two nurses, my husband, a security guard and me. WOW!! I was the only patient and the care was excellent. The nurses were right there all the time. No pain medicine was requested because they jumped on it when I started showing signs. When I finally came to enough, I asked my husband if he had taken his meds (17 of them everyday) and he said to me, "How could I forget, every nurse, the doctor, the a-man and the o.r. tech all reminded me). Seems I made a lot of request for his care before I went completly out. )
I am glad I had this done. I did not realize how heavy I felt inside till it was gone and even though I am still recovering (3 weeks) I feel like a new person. No HRT so I do have some volcanic episodes (hot flashes) but I'll manage. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
