Hysterectomy Stories
Ask A Doctor
My castle story started with years and years of dealing with many Dr.'s about my many pains, severe cramps, heavy periods and terrible pms-which I had came to believe was a way of life for all women. Since my tvh and anterior repairs I am a "new woman". My castle date was Dec. 2nd, 2003, a day and a so longed for moment that I thought and believed would never arrive. Reality has hit and now realize the waiting is over, my day has arrived. Sooo many feelings are upon me from, feeling anxious and excited to feeling scared and nervous. This is when I realized I must find support and understanding from somewhere or someone who could make me feel safe and secure about all of this happening to me, this is where the Hystersisters came in. The Hystersisters have been a truely Gods sent throughout my ordeal and I owe them all my confidence and wisdom I have learned. The morning of my surgery I was a wreck, thankfully enough my df was in control and calm. We arrived at the castle at approx. 7am, filled out the necessary paper work and answered all the needed questions. Soon after I was wisped away to be prepped for surgery where they inserted an iv into my arm for antibiotics-which took some effort as well as patience on the nurses behalf. Next my df and mother were allowed to sit with me until it was time to go to surgery, we said our good-bye's and gave our kisses and off they rushed me. The operating room was sterile, cold and gloomy, but everyone there was smiling and cheerful doing their best to make me feel safe and relaxed. My dr. held my shaking hands and smiled at me until I was fast asleep into lala land. Next thing I knew was I was waking up in recovery in alot of pain and sooo thirsty. I was then rushed to my private room where my df and tear filled mother were awaiting my return. I slept most of the remainder of the day in between pain shots to my hip. The wonderful, kind 3rd shift nurse got me up throughout the night to drink, sit up and cough and to give me another shot -of course. By 5 am the nurse was freeing me of my catheter, removing the unbelievable amount of packing and had me up in a chair drinking my juice cocktail, while she changed my bed. She then took me down the hall for my first walk, all bent over and groggy from pain meds...I did it!! Then back to bed. Df arrived at 7am with a smile and a kiss, he got me up and into the warm and relaxing shower, made me feel alot better. Around 10am my mother arrived-she too being a hysterectomy survivor, insisted on a walk to the nursery, and back to bed. The more you walk the easier it is to pass gas, have bowel movements and dont have to wear those annoying inflateable leggings, said the nurses. My Dr. came to check on me around 2pm, and informed me as soon as I passed gas I was free to go home, woohoo! Df and I were headed for home by 5pm. The first 2 to 3 weeks were rough with lots of gas pains and pains when I had a bowel movement. By week 4 I was feeling much better and up walking more and more. At 5 weeks post op I am feeling great and am truely a "new woman" and know what it is like to live pain free and free to live. God bless to each and everyone of you here at Hystersisters. susan
