I am a retired midwife. I used to have the periods from h---! All the women in my family have had hysterectomies and I wanted to keep all my innerds. I decided to have the "Roller Ball" procedure. I researched it and found a doctor. I interviewed him with another midwife friend so that he would remember that I did NOT want a hysterectomy!!
I went in to the hospital for the out patient procedure. I had a spinal for that and the first thing the dr. did was push the hysteroscope right through my uterus. He said, "Woa, I put it right through!! Put her under general-NOW!" Needless to say I panicked just before a general. Not a good time to panic.
He had to perform a laparoscopy to be sure he didn't puncture any other organs. When he got in there he found one ovary with a huge cyst on it. He actually left the OR and went and spoke to my husband to see if he could remove that one ovary. My husband gave him permission. YIKES!
About 3 hours later I awoke in a hospital room, vomitting severely, with a feeling that my abdomen was going to explode. He had done a hysterectomy through a vertical incision. I had a c/section scar (bikini), but I guess he didn't want to use that. He also didn't ask my husband or me before he performed the hysterectomy.
Later when I asked him why he did the hyst. and all he could say was that he felt I'd be in to see him within 6 months anyway, to have the hyst. so he just did it then. I don't think this was the right thing to do. I also don't believe him that it wasn't an emergency. I got the pathology report (only for the ovary) and all the office records, but I guess I need to get the hospital records-surgery report and pathology report for the uterus.
I have spoken to friends about this and every one of them say I should sue him. This happened May 95. And I found out a friend was going to go to this same dr. for the "roller ball" and I told her about my experience and she cancelled with him and is going to get 2nd and 3rd opinions first.
Wow-I am still angry about this, and sad.
