It has been six weeks since my TAH/BSO and I am getting out of the house a little, driving some if I have to and trying to get back into cooking my own meals and keeping up with household chores a little better.

I went to my doctor six and a half weeks ago and told him if I was ever going to have this hysterectomy it had better be now because my sweet husband was changing jobs and we might not have insurance for a time. He looked surprised, even though I have been telling him for the last 8 years that I felt my periods were inordinately heavy and I thought there might be more going on than pre-menopausal confusion. I had a major stroke three years ago and thought the heavy bleeding might be due to the blood thinners I took for a while.

On a pelvic exam he said, "Wow, I think this fibroid is pretty large." Ultrasound showed a grapefruit size tumor. My OB-GYN had seen the fibroid up close and personal about two years ago when I had an appendectomy, but did not think at the time we needed to do more than "watch it."

So two days after my appointment with him I was in the hospital, taking a few deep breaths and getting knocked out for the TAH/BSO which took about three hours of surgery. There was some urinary tract blockage and another trip to the O.R. that night with a urologist, my OB and the OB from his office who was on call. As that turned out, they had to go back into the incision and put in a stint. I'm just glad the anesthetic was so good, I didn't really know what was going on.

I left the hospital after four days, with a catheter and came home with the assistance of my three young adult children. My husband was busy with the new job so I really hardly saw him for three weeks.

He is a pastor and the congregation has felt duty bound to feed me and fatten me back up to the level I was before the surgery. I dropped about 15 pounds during all that and would have been just as happy to keep it off.

I have some nerve damage that has effected my left thigh and my right hand which we think will clear up.

The congregation asked me Sunday if I was back to normal, I just said, well, I'm back. I'm not exactly sure I remember normal. I don't think I have felt normal in years.

If anyone remembers normal, clue me in!
