I have been a resident of east central Minnesota, USA, my entire life and I enjoy the “very dramatic” change of seasons we experience in my home state.

The medical circumstances which resulted in my decision to have a hysterectomy, at the age of 50, were an enlarged fibroid uterus that I was told was causing heavier menstrual bleeding and back pain. I opted to have a prophylactic oophorectomy (removal of both ovaries) at the same time.

My surgery went off without a hitch. All the medical personnel were wonderful and my hospital experience could not possibly have been better. My trouble came with the surgical menopause that resulted from having my ovaries removed. Although my hot flashes and other bothersome symptoms were effectively treated by Estratest, (an estrogen-plus-testosterone combination once-daily pill) I experienced ongoing problems with anxiety and insomnia. These unsettling and unexpected challenges really “threw me for a loop” and eventually I went on-line to search for information about surgical menopause. That’s when I discovered the HysterSisters website, because it seems that no matter what words or phrases I typed into my search, the results kept bringing me here. As a new member, I perused the Hormone Jungle Articles and read posts from women like me who were struggling with the after-effects of sudden hormonal disruption. Off-line, I also persevered in working with my family physician to find an effective treatment for my lingering symptoms, and finally, after nearly a year, I began to feel a little more like “me” again.

Without a doubt, Hystersisters.com is the “best on the net” when it comes to serving the needs of women involved in “the hysterectomy experience,” and I am proud to be a member of the Hostess Team. I enjoy interacting with new members in the Pre-Op Forum, trying to make them feel welcome and comfortable and offering assistance in locating the appropriate resources on the site to help in preparation for their upcoming journey to good health.

In closing, I feel that although my own "hysterectomy experience" was not among the best experiences in my life, all in all, it wasn't among the worst, either. And I hope that, eventually -- after all the healing has occurred and the dust has settled -- everyone embarking on this journey ultimately fares as well as me. As it is with many other aspects of my life, I consider myself blessed.
