Ask A Doctor
My journey to the castle started with a yearly exam, family doctor sends me to gynecologist, who recommends hysterectomy with anterior and posterior repairs and sends me to a urologist who recommends a bladder sling in addition to other fixes. It was a very trying, emotional time in which HysterSisters was my life saver.
I had to be at the castle at 5:30am, Monday, May 24th, for a 7:30am surgery. I awoke promptly at 4:30am (after about 3 hours of sleep!!), showered, kissed my kids, and off I went.
Check in was easy since I pre-registered over the phone. I was given a little curtained off area with a bed, and told to get undressed. I had forgotten to take off my jewelry and had to give it to my husband. After I undressed, I was weighed (yea! I had lost 5 lbs!), tucked into bed with heavenly warm blankets, and an IV was started by my wonderful pre-op nurse who used numbing stuff. She had also had a hysterectomy and really helped put me at ease. After hearing that I was having repairs, she winked at my husband and said, “Be just like when she was 18.” That right there was justification enough for him for 8 weeks of no sex!! After a bit of waiting, transportation came to wheel me down to the pre-op room. I was a bit annoyed because the admitting nurse told me my husband would be able to stay until they wheeled me into surgery room. No such luck, he wasn’t allowed in the pre-op room. They also took my glasses at that point and I was really blind for about 45 minutes.
In the pre-op room I was given some IV antibiotics, which were straight from the fridge and made my whole arm freezing. Got a warm blanket just for my arm!! My urologist came, then my surgical nurse, then the gyn, and finally the A-man. Every time someone new came in I had to recite name and birth date, just to make sure they had the right person. Finally they came to get me and I was wheeled into the operating room. I scooted over to the table, laid down and then……………………….
I have vague memories of being handed a morphine pump button, then the first real memory I have is waking up at 2:30 in PAIN!! My guess is that I was too out of it to press the button and when I finally woke up they pain had gotten the better of me. My husband was there and I was crying for him to help me. Poor guy didn’t know what to do!! He got my nurse, explained I was in a lot of pain, could she do anything? She told me to push my button and left. Hmmm. Morphine pump was doing NOTHING!! Husband had to leave to get the kids from school, so I kissed him goodbye, still crying. A nurse wandered by after helping my room mate and I asked her for help with the pain. She actually gave me the hand!! Told me she was not my nurse and to push my button and out she went! About ˝ hour later I called the nurse again, told her the pump wasn’t cutting it. She gave me an extra dose, told me to keep pushing the button and left, never to be seen again. After about another hour of crying, got some one to up the dosage on the machine and finally had a bit of relief, but still hurt pretty bad. I was to the point that I still really hurt, but didn’t care because of all the drugs!!
I was laying there in a drugged haze when the nurse came in and decided to check the catheter . The reason for my pain soon became apparent. She took 3200cc of urine from the bag. WAY more than the bag could handle. My bladder was sooooo full.. This was about 7 pm. It was the first time anyone had checked it!!! Thus began a not so great castle stay!!
The rest of my castle stay passed with mediocre nursing care, lack of concern, and too much Jell-o!!! I hope to never see it ever again. I was never mis-treated, but was not treated well. On my last day I had a very nice nurse who dealt with my discharge, thank goodness for her. My room mate was even told she couldn't have another warm blanket as the nurse thought she had passed her limit of them for the day!!
I am recovering wonderfully, have been off all meds since week 2, can pee on my own, didn’t need my anterior repair, and am glad all-in-all I had my hysterectomy. Thanks to HysterSisters and everyone who visit’s the site, I am well on my road to recovery!!
