My castle story really started back in March 2003 when I had an ablation to try to control my very heavy and clotty AF. It was a tough procedure but I had high hopes as did my dr. that it would help me and we wouldn’t have to do surgery since I have a blood clotting disorder that we found the hard way, after having my son emergency c-section and I threw 5 clots to my lungs. AF was better for a while then steadily each month my period lasted longer and longer and got worse and worse. In March 2004 I had my yearly and the Dr. and I discussed the AF situation… I was up to 15 day periods where I was using overnight pads with a super tampon; changing both each hour and I was having cramps so bad I felt like I was in labor again. It was affecting my ability to be a good mom to my 5 yr. old and my ability to work. It was decided that the only choice left was a hyster. So I went home and discussed it with dh and called my Dr. back the following week to set it up for right after school was out for me… June 22. I was told to come here to hyster-sisters for questions and support by a friend after I set my date up and I have gained a lot of information which helped me know what to expect and feel more secure in my decision to have this surgery.
On June 22, 2004 dh, ds, and I left the house at 7 am. I took our son into preschool and gave him a huge hug and told him I love him and that daddy would come get him after school to come see me… I was getting my tummy fixed. The teacher patted me on the shoulder and told me he’d have a fun and busy day and wished me luck. We arrived on the surgery floor at 7:35 am where I changed into my lovely princess gown of blue and little white footy socks that I brought. The nurse started my IV…but kindly numbed the area first- yeah! Once I was on the stretcher and hooked up to the anti-biotic they brought back dh to hold my hand. The anesthesiologist came and talked with us… he wanted to do a spinal block but I had a bad experience with that when I had my son and told him that I’d be much better off just being asleep for the whole thing. We also discussed getting some anti-nausea medication before going under. Then about 5 minutes later my Dr. came over and explained the procedure again and asked if we had any questions… I told him I was VERY nervous and he said that he would have the anesthesiologist give me something to relax since it would be about 15 minutes till I was taken in. He squeezed my hand and said “ You are going to do great and when this is all over you will feel so much better.” I just love my Dr., and so does dh… he knows how to put you at ease! A few minutes later another anesthesiologist came over and introduced himself as being the one who would be with me the whole time and he gave me a shot through the IV. I asked him if it was the anti-nausea stuff and he said “No, it’s my special happy potion. But I will give you some stuff for that once we get in back.” He looked at dh and said he would take good care of me and he could go wait in the family center now. I barely remember dh squeezing my hand and telling me he loved me before drifting off.
I woke up in recovery and scrambled to remove the mask off my face… those things make me panic! The nurse put it back and pushed my pain med button and I was off again. The next thing I knew I was moving down a hall. The nurse noticed I was waking up and told me I have to leave my mask on because my oxygen levels are a little low then BAM. They had run me into a doorway! OMG-that hurt!!!! She found my button, pushed it again for me, and put it into my hand telling me to push the button if I needed to. Then they moved me from the stretcher to my bed using my sheet under me. Oh how I wished they would have done that before they allowed me to wake up!!!!! Most of the rest of Tuesday was groggy except for the realization that I had not been catheterized and had to get up and walk to the bathroom!
Wednesday morning the nurses got me up at 5 am… aren’t you supposed to rest in the hospital? Dh came by before work to see how I was doing and about lunch time my FIL came by to visit with me. They brought me a tray of normal food which I questioned the assistant about… I really didn’t feel like eating, couldn’t I just get some soup and crackers or something? They said I could eat since I was able to get up and urinate. BAD IDEA… they should have listened to me because about 15 min after I took a few bites of rice and chicken I told FIL I was feeling really ill and I grabbed my tummy pillow and the kidney-shaped bowl thing. He left the room in a hurry and I proceeded to throw up all over myself. Nothing like getting ill and making your insides feel like they will be flying out of your body via your incision. I had to get a huge needle in my leg for anti-nausea. Wed. night they took away my pain button and switched me to oral meds which I prayed hard would stay down and luckily they did..
Thursday morning I was more with-it and the Dr. told me about the surgery… they had found a growth the size of a tangerine attached to my left ovary and uterus. They removed it but were able to keep the ovary. We just had to wait for the lab report, but he felt like it would be fine. Since I was still nauseous and had not kept food down yet I had to stay another day. My room mate and I had the same surgery but she had no problems afterward so she was going home today. . . in the meantime she was getting LOTS of phone calls and visitors which was driving me crazy since I was trying to rest like a good princess and had to walk past her area to get the bathroom! She finally left at 5:00 and I was looking forward to a nice quiet night to myself. Then my dh, ds, and his godparents with their daughter walked in about 6:00. My friend had brought something to cheer me up though…. A tiara, wand, earrings, and a stuffed teddy bear dressed as a princess. We all had a good laugh. (Of course I used my tummy pillow )
Friday morning I got to take a shower. It really wore me out to stand for that long but the warm water felt so good! I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to wash my hair! After lunch my Dr. came to tell me the good news… the growth was not cancer and since I was keeping food down now I could go home!!!! The car ride home was a bit uncomfortable but being in my own bed was awesome. I was lucky that I had all very nice nurses while in the castle and my Dr. will always be my prince charming who went in and carefully slayed the dragon hiding in my belly.
