in August of this year, I was diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes. I also had Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome my whole adult life (which predisposed me to diabetes.) My doctor put me on Glucophage, and jokingly said "Let's see if we can get you pregnant" on her way out of the exam room. (This medication can cause fertility to return to one with PCOS.) I took this as a joke, and ignored it. Several weeks later, my husband was talking to my ob/gyn, who is also my husbands best friend, and told him about the diabetes and medication. Doc of course asked Doug what sort of birth control we were using. We are both 45, and happy that my 19 year old adopted daughter is about ready to leave the nest, and not particularly interested in starting a second family. I made an appointment the next day. It was early for it, but after discussing options, and deciding my husband would get a vasectomy, the doc gave me my yearly pelvic exam. He thought he felt fibroids, and although they were causing no symptoms, felt I should get a baseline ultrasound just in case symptoms arose.

A week later, the technician who was doing the ultrasound asked some scary questions about pain, weird bleeding, when was my next appointment with my doc, etc. While she was asking these questions, I was seeing what looked like huge shadows on the screen. I could see the black and white screen, my husband saw the color one, and we were both scared. The tech then said she would be back in 10 minutes, the radiologist would look at the pics, and I was to stay there in case they had to re-do any. 45 minutes later, I got up and dressed, found someone else who worked there, and announced I had waited long anough, I was leaving. This woman begged me to wait, and promised to find my tech. I told her I was going out to have a cigarette, and would come back in, and the tech had better be ready to tell me something then.

When I returned, Doc was on the phone, and had talked to the radiologist. Now I was really scared. He began asking me about any symptoms I had not told him about. There were none. What the ultrasound showed was very large tumors on both ovaries, as well as a good size fibroid on my uterus. Two days later, I had a CT scan, which gave the doc 11 different possible diagnoses. I was then scheduled for a complete abdominal hysterectomy the following week. The diagnosis was Low Malignancy Potential tumors on both ovaries, fibroids on the uterus as well as a calcium based tumor, and both fallopian tubes glogged with blood clots and fluid. Luckily there was no spread of cancerous cells, pelvic wash came back clean, and I should live to a ripe old age.

Other than my intestines getting confused and working backwards for a week after surgery, post operative recovery went well. So I didn't eat anything for a week, and lost 20 lbs, I did ok, and am doing MUCH better now. I can actually say that the pain and healing process were MUCH easier than I expected, and if I had it to do over again, well, I think I would prefer to not do it, but it was not so bad after-all!
