TVH - My Hysterectomy Saga...

From the Vaginal Hysterectomy Stories Articles List

On Sept. 1 2004 I went in for a TVH for aden. and a prolapsed uterus. It was supposed to be a simple surgery home the next day, driving in 2 weeks. My mom and oldest sister took me to the outpatient surgery clinic, which looked like a dentist office. I was very nervous but hoping this would clear up pains I had for 10 years. I am 37 years old healthy with 3 children 13, 16, 17 with a wonderful hubby. My doctor was a very good Dr. with many kudos about him. My surgery was 7 a.m. the Dr. came and told my mom and sis everything went great with very little bleeding. But, what he did not know I was waking in the recovery with intense pain in my stomach. He came and checked on me and said I was bleeding internally and I would have to go back to surgery. I could not have any pain meds. since blood pressure was dropping terribly. Soon as I got back to the OR I told them to hurry and knock me out and they graciously did! I had all 3 of my kids naturally with no drugs, this pain was terrible! Now my tummy had to be cut open 6 inches from belly button down. I was in surgery for 5 hours, I had a football sized hematoma and still bleeding. They never did find where the blood was coming from but they cauterized a lot of areas. They lost me once during surgery, I had 3 units of blood. My DH, Mom, and sis were so nervous not realizing how serious it was till 3 p.m. They would not let them see me till I was stabilized enough to be transported to nearby ICU. I arrived at the ICU at 6p.m. that night. I was in a bubbled heated blanket and had swelled up terribly for the first time for them to see me. My family was so shocked. I was finally stabilized in the ICU 36 hours. I come from a family that prays and I know God brought me through this mess. I got to women's side of hospital, ended up having drain tubes, NG tube, Oxygen, Catheter, PICC line, too many tubes! I was swollen to about the size of 300 lbs. with very white skin. Now they find out I have blocked bowel, and E-Coli. The meds they put in me I will never know them all! The pain was terrible but the reaction with the morphine worse (hallucinations) Demoral and Toredol were finally replaced and it was wonderful it worked. I had every surgeon, infectious disease dr., and my ob/gyn dr. that took good care of me at the hospital. Every day I had a different thing taken out was a celebration. I came home on Sept. 13 (a wonderful day) with a PICC line in for the meds every 6 hours. A home health nurse and DH took care of me. I finally got PICC line out 2 weeks later, DH and I finally get to sleep at night!! On Sept. 24th my incision had a bubble on it and they lanced it open then on 27th had drain tube put back in. It is the 30th today and honestly I am feeling 80% better still on Vicodin, strong oral antibiotics, and stool softners. I know this has been long but I was asked to put my story on here so I am.
I just want to let others know your body is very fragile and we are never promised another day so love, live like there is no tommorow!!! You can amazingly make it through a lot of pain! I don't have hard feelings towards my DR. but mistakes happen and he has been so sorry and has gotten every top specialist for me! I know soon I will feel all better and be back to driving, football games, watching my DD cheer, My DS play in band, and his high school plays! This has been character building for all of us! Most of all THANK YOU GOD FOR BEING HERE WITH ME!!!
Love to all
please don't be scared someone is watching over each one of us!
