My story started on my 11th birthday, the day I started my period. I can remember at age 13 bleeding so heavily that I couldn't go to school. If I did make it to school I was so lightheaded that often times I would faint. Mom never made a huge deal out of it because "she was just like that", so I never made a big deal out of it. Thus began my journey into the world of the "Superwoman".
The only time I can recall having an easy go of my periods was for the first year of my marriage when I was taking birth control pills. Unfortunately I couldn't take them for long as they made me pack on the weight in gross amounts. Ibuprphen soon became my drug of choice and my cape got heavier.
Jump ahead to October 29,2000 and you'll find me being rushed to the emergency room for severe uncontrollable bleeding and huge blood clots. I finally admitted to myself that something wasn't right. I was admitted into the hospital and my blood flow was monitored. Apparently losing 6 cups of blood and clots in a 3 hour time span is not the way it's supposed to be. I had my first D&C and an external and internal ultrasound and found myself back home in 2 days. Still bleeding but at least it had slowed to a respectable amount.
My genereal physician called me a day later and told me he needed to see me that afternoon. In his office he told me that he had a referal from the surgeon who did my D&C that recommended a hysterectomy as soon as possible. (Surgeon was a big city OBGYN specialist/surgeon who just happened to be in our small town operating room that morning) My uterus was grossly deformed (apparently from a horrendous childbirth experience) and I was packing an abnormal amount of fibroids. Many the size of golf balls. The fact that every woman on my mothers side had endured uterin cancer in her 30's was also a determining factor.
I had one more consult with the surgeon and on Dec.8,2000 I found myself taking a cab to the hospital. I was in for 6 full days and inspite of the fact that the surgery went well, everything else went wrong. Little complications that are more annoying than life threatening: fever, antibiotics, 5 I.V's in 5 days, thrush in my mouth, blockage after the catheter was removed, bowels didn't work till I came home, burn/blisters from the "hypo-allergenic" tape used on the dressing, and healing from the inside out and not like normal people who heal outside in.
I have been home for a week now and because I'm a single mom of a 9 & 5 yr.old I've found that I've had to put on my superwoman cape once again. Although I think I have moths, it's got a couple holes in it.

My best wishes to everyone who has been to the castle and back... may you find the real woman surface after the pain is gone.
