Hank's Experience

I know what you are all thinking, but I'm not a man! Hank is just my nickname at work. I had my hysterectomy on 11/2/99 after a year and a half of heavy bleeding, frequent urination and a uterus the size of a 5 month pregnancy (fibroids). Many people told me terrible horror stories and I was afraid I would die. I told my husband who to contact at work so that he could collect on my
life insurance policy. It was all for naught, as I had a very easy experience. I went in on the morning of the surgery, they called me right away and started an IV, which didn't hurt because they used novocaine before inserting the IV catheter. There was very little prep (no enemas, no douches and very little shaving- just a little at the top). I tried to stay awake during surgery and
have spinal anesthesia because I am a singer and didn't want to be intubated during general anesthesia. Unfortunately, I ended up being knocked out because my doctor tells me that I was feeling pain once she got into the
abdomen. I don't know because I can't remember anything until I got to recovery. Once there, I woke right up and when I got to my room, I changed into a long T-shirt, put on my makeup and immediately got on the phone to all my friends and family. I did have the PCA pump and a catheter for the first night, but I persuaded the nurse to let me stand up for a minute that afternoon. I wasn't nauseous either! The next morning, the IV and the catheter were taken out, I took a shower and was up and walking. All my work friends (men!) came to visit me at lunchtime, so I made sure I was dressed and made up. I walked them to the elevator and they couldn't believe how mobile I was. On the 3rd day post op, I went home. I really didn't have a
whole lot of pain and was up and around a lot when I got home, including going up and down stairs and taking short walks outside. I did take Percoset for 2 days in the hospital and 1 day after getting home, just in case but after that I didn't need anything. I wanted to go back to work full time after 2 weeks, but my doctor would not allow it. I went back after 4 and had no problems at all. I'm 35, married without kids and people told me I would get depressed, have raging hormones (they left my ovaries and cervix) but none
of that happened at all. I feel better than ever, and want to reassure women who are afraid. If you are determined to have a good experience and have a mind set that you will be fine, you will be. I have no ill effects whatsoever as a result of the surgery and six weeks post op am doing everything I could
before. The scar is only a very thin line which I'm sure will fade into nothing. I
wish everyone who will be going through this the best of luck and as speedy a recovery as I had!
-Hank
