How many times have you seen on this site that the waiting is the worst part? It's true!!

I needed to have something done due to heavy periods and anemia. I felt like I was living in a fog all the time - even when taking iron. I couldn't think fast enough and was generally not interested in much. Don't get me wrong - I functioned, but just not myself.

We tried birth control pills for a while then I had a Novasure ablation in April, but the periods kept coming back. We decided in August to do the hysterectomy, but the doctor wanted to do 3 months of Lupron Depot to shrink the fibroids. That's when the waiting really started. You kind of just want to get everything over with!

I had LSH on November 17th. I had to do an enema and douche the night before (I was actually more worried about that - had never given myself an enema - it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be!)

We got to the castle at 5:30 AM did the vitals and given an IV with antibiotic - I didn't feel I needed anything to relax me, but they offered, which is great - if you want it - take it - you'll be sleeping anyway. At 7:31AM, it was off to the OR

The nurses were so good in the operating room. Introduced themselves, helped me slide over to the operating table and the next thing I know, I was waking up!

Spent some time in recovery, but thank goodness, I seem to handle anesthesia well (had back surgery a couple of years ago and it was the same), so I woke up feeling pretty good. I was in my room by 2:00 (surgery lasted until 11:00) They brought me clear liquids at 3:00 and a real supper at 6:00.

I had a catheter in (it didn't hurt - just made me feel like I had to pee) and the compression sleeves on my legs. They got me up at 7:00PM to go for a walk (rolling the IV pole in front of me and holding on to that).

I was getting pain meds through the IV - every 6 hours - the last one was at 6:00AM the next morning.

DR came in at 7:45 and looked at incisions. He told me one of them was going to bruise fairly well because he had to do quite a bit of work. Turns out the Lupron did not shrink the fibroid as he had hoped and that's why the surgery was about an hour longer than expected. He also said his thumb was sore from working with the machine for so long! lol

He left it up to me if I wanted to stay an extra night. He thought I looked pretty good and could go home that afternoon.

After he left, the catheter, IV's and compression boots all came off! I walked around a few time with DH and we decided it was fine for me to go home.

Some of the nurses were amazed at the way I could move around. This hospital has the "morcellator" machine that was used for the lap only on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, so they haven't gotten a lot of exposure to the post op of it yet. I am truly amazed when I look at those 3 little incisions that they are able to do it!

Took a nap yesterday afternoon once home, got up for supper, watch some TV and was in bed by 8:45. Slept until 7:30 today.

My belly is definitely "swelly" and feels heavy, but the pain is not too bad (like bad cramps). I feel a little weak and weepy this morning but really not as bad as I thought I might. Working with just Motrin for pain right now.

I'm letting DH take care of me (I'm lucky, he's retired) and plan on trying to behave with short walks and rest.

This site really helped make the whole thing a lot easier! The posts about gas pains (how many people will talk about that in public?), what to take to the hospital and the support have really helped me prepare and get through this. I'm sure I'll continue to rely on it in weeks to come.

Thanks!
