I am 38 and had a LSH for one 9 cm fibroid and one 4 cm fibroid on 11/10/04. I am writing this on Day 12 of post op and feeling pretty well. Here is my story.
I had known I had fibroids since my doc found one in a routine gyn exam when I was about 24. It had caused a little spotting but no other problems, so the docs indicated there was no cause for concern. The spotting stopped, and I never gave my fibroids a second thought.
I had two babies by C-section at age 30 & 34. The fibroids didn't cause any problems with my pregnancy, but I delivered 3 weeks early with both babies.
I had suffered from heavy periods my entire life. I had too many stories of flooding, staining, pain and embarrassment to count. In the years after my second baby was born, my heavy periods returned and grew worse. In Jan. 2003, I underwent an endometrial ablation. It vastly curtailed my bleeding for about 10 months. Then slowly my bleeding returned. Then in May 2004, the pain arrived. After ultrasound, we discovered my larger fibroid had doubled in size in a year and now was large than my uterus. It was time for it to come out.
I spent 6 months considering my options, trying herbal remedies and progesterone cream before undergoing LSH in Nov. 2004. Here is the story of that surgery.
My surgery was set for 10:30, but when I arrived they informed me it had been moved to 11am. The pre op area was a madhouse -- packed with people being prepped for surgery. The nurse showed me to a preop room with no bed. It took them about an hour to find me a bed.
They put the support stockings on, took blood and urine and asked a bunch of the same questions I had been asked about a dozen times before. Finally my bed arrived. My doc briefly came in, and I met the anesthesiologist for the first time. They gave me Versed to relax me, which I found had very little effect. I was pretty alert when being rolled into the op room.
The anesth said I might be getting double vision, and I did. Then they put the mask on, and to me it seemed like ages before I feel asleep. But I did, of course.
The next thing I remember is bawling my eyes out. The anesth. was telling me that crying can be a natural reaction to the anesthesia. Then I was in the recovery room begging to see my DH. All they said was "no." Nothing about when I could see him or why I had to wait. Evidently no family members are allowed in the recovery room. I would have liked to know that before hand!
I was wheeled up to my room at about 4 pm. My surgery had taken 2-3/4 hours (longer than the 2 hours they promised).
I had a lot of pain that night. The doc ordered only Demerol and Percocet. No morphine & no pca pump. The catheter began backing up at 3 am, and when I called the nurse in, she said Dr. said she could take it out, so she did. (that was not painful). I hobbled to the bathroom with my IV stand and immediately peed. Yeah!
I was discharged at about 9:30 am the next morning. I took percocet and an ambien at home and slept the whole day and most of the next day.
Each day has found me feeling considerably better than the rest since then. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, yeah!
