TAH with reaction to pain meds?

Hi. I just read a post from Lily in Australia. She told of a reaction to her pain
meds. It made me decide to tell my story. I wasn't going to, because my story is not normal, I'm sure. When I discussed pain meds with the Anesthesiologist, I was given the choice of Morphine pump, or an epidural. Since I have had back surgery in the past, and have a lot of back pain, I was a little worried about having needles stuck in my spine. I was worried, though, too, about a possible reaction to Morphine during my back surgery. I had experienced a nasty migraine the day I was to go home from the hospital. One nurse felt it was due to a reaction with the Morphine. The anesthesiologist assured me that Morphine could not cause this type of reaction and that it was probably just coincidence. We decided to use the Morphine pump, because of my back problems. The surgery itself went great. I had a TAH, keeping both ovaries. I woke up after surgery with a painful back, and my GYN prescribed Toradol shots for it. After the first shot my back felt much better. I wanted to get up even on the first day, but they wouldn't let me. The next morning, I was raring to go.
They took off the stockings, and removed my catheter. I got up and moved around the room and felt great. I didn't even have that much pain. I could stand up pretty straight, which I, myself thought was pretty amazing. I am not in very good shape, and am overweight, so I thought I would have a lot of trouble. That morning after surgery, I did get a migraine, which I had been afraid of. They had to move me to a private room, so I could have quiet and darkness. That migraine was so bad, that 150mg. Demerol shots had no effect. I couldn't stand to do anything, but lay there in misery. Finally, we tried Stadol NS, after three days of misery. The Stadol NS worked, and after three doses, the migraine was gone. I had walked a few times during this migraine, but not as much as if I had been feeling better. My GYN wanted me to stay another day, but all I wanted to do was go home. He let me go, and it felt so good to
be home. I am only 8 days post-op, and I feel so good, that I feel guilty not doing things around the house. I am always sure to check this site everyday, as it has been very helpful. I now am really suspicious of the Morphine, and I probably will request something else if I ever have to have any surgery in the future. My incision doesn't hurt too badly and I have used only a couple of pain pills. I have had three migraines since I got home, but they have been mild. So, as far as my surgery goes, my experience has been very positive so far. My only
complication was these nasty migraines. I have chosen not to use HRT for now, unless my ovaries don't function properly. We are worried that the HRT will complicate my migraines too much. Well, that's my long story. I hope everyone else's surgery experience is a good as mine - minus the migraines!!
