Hi All,
I have had fibroids for at least the last seven years, and at the time of diagnosis was told that I would need a hyst. I was so against having a hyst that I tried every other alternative that was possible. I eventually became so anemic - 7.5 in mid November and 6.5 at time of admission, that I required three units of blood.
My Dr. originally said that he would do a vaginal hyst, but after admission when my iron count was so low - he said that he would rather do an abdominal hyst just so he would know that all bleeding had stopped prior to closing the incision. I agreed with him. I was not terribly nervous before surgery - I knew that I would feel so much better without the heaviness of the fibroids and the anemia. The blood transfusion was a little painful - I felt a burning sensation which the Dr. said was normal.
Due to the anemia, I had a spinal instead of general anethesia, I remember moving onto the operating table, bending over for the spinal and then nothing else. I woke up feeling very nausious and felt that I needed to vomit. I felt this way all of Tuesday, 12/28. I was in and out of it - and when I was awake, I felt ill.
Also, my blood pressure went sky high after surgery and the nurses wondered if I normally had high blood pressure and if I was on medication for it - well, I don't normally, and have never been on medication. They eventually determined that it was caused by fluid overload and the stress of surgery.
By Wednesday I was feeling pretty good, I was able to walk, take a shower and wanted to go home. When I spoke with the Dr. he said that if he had tried to do the hyst vaginally, he would have had to switch to an abdominal hyst since my uterus was rock hard and shaped like a basketball. When my children saw me dressed and out of bed, they said that I had lost weight. LOL What I lost was a basketball!
I came home on Thursday, 12/30/04 and feel good. My iron count is 9.5 - still low, but much better than what I'd been used to! I have an appointment on Monday, 1/3/05 to have the staples removed and to go over the pathology report.
