Well, I am almost 5 weeks post-op and have waited too long to share. My surgery was scheduled the Wednesday before Thanksgiving for the 29th of November so I didn't really have any time to stress out..with the Holiday keeping my mind plenty occupied.

I arrived at the hospital with DH at 11 AM..surgery was supposed to be at 3PM But I needed bloodwork and lots of other tests done so I went early. I had nothing to eat since Saturday night except clear liquids through Sunday at 8 PM. Then I got to do the wonderful Bowel Prep which was far worse than the operation itself in my humble opinion. Drinking that awful stuff and gagging and then spending my last normal night at home on the toilet completely isolated from my family was torture.

I actually had my surgery at 6 PM because the doctor was running behind. I also had decided to quit smoking so I hadn't had a cigarette since the night before and therefore had a terrible nicotine headache. (Still haven't smoked in 5 weeks - another bonus.) I remember being given a shot after I moved to the operating table and remember nothing else until I waoke up in recovery at about 9 PM. My legs would not move at all and I could not feel my feet or anything below the belly...however my upper body was jerking uncontrollably and it was freaking me out. I asked them to get my husband and they said he couldn't come in yet and the next thing I remember he was there..thank the Lord. The DD said they wanted me pain free for the first 12 hours after surgery so not to worry about not feeling anything. That night I didn't sleep much after midnight and was obsessing about my legs not working. Finally I fell asleep and then they woke me up to put some sort of binding thing around me which in my opinion was a complete waste of time and effort..the only thing it did was make me sweat. The catheter came out that morning and I was offered some broth which smelled awful but I did manage to choke down..along with what seemed like gallons of water..I couldn't get enough water. I was up and walking Tuesday morning and two beautiful flower arrangements were delivered and by early afternoon had filled my room with their smell which made me vomit. I made them take the flowers out and didn't have much of a problem after that. Tuesday was definately an awful day because my potassium was low and they were giving me potasium through the same IV pump as my morphine and it hurt like the devil so I wouldn't push the morphine pump and then would be a little sore. Was very weepy on Tuesday also...my DS and daughter-in-law stayed with me most of that dreadful afternoon. The nurses, aides and everyone except the surgical staff was AWFUL. I couldn't wait to get out of there. My doc found out they hadn't given me anything to eat at all for two days and was very angry. Ordered food that minute..Wednesday night...which was gross but I made myself choke down some of it. Next day I got to go home.

I fel very good once home and almost back to normal by week 3...just a little slow. I am almost 100% now...just can't exercise yet.

It was definately worth it and not that bad at all.

God Bless you all for being here!
