Sorry it's taken me so long. I had my surgery on 1/5 and it went very well. My surgery was right on time, 8:30 in the morning. I have to admit I got a little emotional about 20 minutes before the surgery was going to start. Nothing dramatic, just that little teary-eyed feeling. My surgery went well, about 1 hour. My uterus and cervix were removed, ovaries remained. I got to my room about 1:00 and had a roommate who had also had a hysterectomy so that worked out good. Funny thing was, the hospital I was in had a bed shortage so we were in the pediatric ward (there were only 2 children on the floor). Thursday night was very uncomfortable, more because I'm not a back-sleeper at all and that was about the only position I could be in. My roommate was also not a back-sleeper so we kept eachother company most of the night. I had a Demerol pump which I didn't really use very often.
Thursday morning I woke up and tried to get out of bed but had excrusiating gas pain that went up to my collarbone. Thursday was not a good day, I do have to admit. Finally on Thursday afternoon they had to start giving me shots of anti-nauscea (sp?) medication. They did that all through Thursday night and kept my on my IV, but my catheter did come out Thursday morning with no problems at all. I spiked a fever at night as well, my husband actually stayed at the hospital until 11:00 to make sure I was ok. The hand my IV was in started to swell at night too, so that had to be moved to my other hand. I got some sleep on Thursday night because of the shots they were giving me.
I woke up Friday morning and felt alot better. My IV came out and I started walking up and down the hall. In fact when my husband got back to the hospital around 1:00 I met him at the elevator. He couldn't believe I felt so well after having such a bad night. I was released from the hospital at 4:00 that afternoon.
My recovery at home has been going well. My husband stayed home from work last week to be with me, it was nice to have him around for the week. I have to admit I still have gas pains every so often and they are pretty strong, but they subside very quickly, it's more like a spasm. They are becoming less and less frequent.
I'm so glad I had this surgery done, and I haven't even felt the implications of that since I haven't hit the date that I would have had my next period. Of course I had gotten my period the day before my surgery, it was like my uterus knew it was going. I'm looking forward to never having to stress out about how I'm going to make it through the day and fit all my bathroom breaks in. It's also nice not carrying around those huge fibroids.
Many times on this site women have voiced they're opinion that this surgery was the worst thing they ever did.... I'm hear to say that I'm very glad I had it done. I'm going to take my time recovery and do it slowly and let my body take the time it needs to heal. It's going to require alot of patience on my part but I'm committed to doing this right the first time. No set-backs for me!
This site has been invaluable to me leading up to my surgery and I'm so glad I found it! Thank you to EVERYONE!!!
