Just a quick synopsis of my surgery day - I arrived at the castle at 5:30 a.m. on 2/1 - took the mandatory pregnancy test (good grief) and then was whisked straight to pre-op. right from the start I had a sweet nurse who was probably about my age, so she put me right at ease, started my IV and made sure all of my admit info was correct. My husband, children and parents were all at the hospital - so they drifted in and out of the pre-op area until the anesthesiologist and his associate popped in - they were there 2 minutes tops and then it was time to head to the OR. That, for me, was the scariest part. I won't say I haven't been nervous, I have, but I have been calm. I still didn't cry or anything, but when they pushed the wheelchair into the OR and you glance around at all of the people (I quickly counted 9!) and all the instruments and that narrow steel table I really wanted to bolt and run! but, I had discussed this with the anesthesiologist who squeezed my arm and told me that they would give me the "I don't care" medicine ASAP. Ha! Well, I laid down on the table and they kept their word - next thing I knew I was in the recovery room. I will admit that I was in pain - but it was not intolerable and the nurses really wanted me to be comfortable. I had to stay in recovery for 2 hours because the hospital was so busy they had to wait for the transport team to get me to my room! The morphine helped with the pain I am sure, but I still felt a lot of break through discomfort, so my DD had ordered Toradol to be given in my IV along with the Morphine if I needed it - It worked like a dream. I drifted in and out of sleep the rest of the day - I was so thrilled when they offered me ice chips right away and then after I kept that down and was not sick from the anesthesia they let me have a DIET PEPSI!!!!! Even through my morphine stupor I was ecstatic! My husband and family stayed with me all day and evening - I definitely wanted them there even though I was absolutely worthless as far as any conversation went (they didn't expect it) - I was scared that evening when my nurse informed me that they would help me sit up and "dangle" my legs over the bed - I could not imagine moving!.....but I have to admit, with all the pain medication they give you that first day, it really was not too bad - the worst part of that was the lightheadedness. I sat up for a minute or so and announced "I bet I could sit in a chair" - so, they let me! Well, that lasted all of 3 minutes, but the nurses were proud of me, I was proud of me, and that was all she wrote for the the rest of the night. I will admit that I did not even feel the catheter - and the leg massagers actually felt nice. The next day, was tougher - by late afternoon they pulled the catheter (which meant I had to pee by myself of course!) - but first they wanted me to traverse up and down the halls - this was not as much fun as "dangling" - I felt like I was 90 instead of 44 - creeping up and down the halls - I was on the surgical floor, so I dragged past several other people who looked decidedly put out too! One person asked me if I wanted to race - which made me laugh, which made my belly hurt, - so I now began to get a picture of what was in store for the next couple of days ---- The dumbest thing that I did was not ask for pain medications during the night on Wednesday (actually early thursday) - they put a lock on my IV when the pulled the catheter - so I decided to be heroic or something dumb - and laid in my bed with a very bad headache and just pain, pain from the surgery - by the time my DD came in to check me Thursday a.m. I was reduced to tears....I had not cried once, but letting myself go that long with the help of some medication was not wise! The nurses quickly got me some Vicodin, patted me on the head, checked my incision and told me not to do that again! Call for pain medicine! so - I did. My DD said, Tracy, this is major surgery, no one thinks you are a baby - please take your medicine! ha! No Problem! After I got my pain under control again the day was tolerable. I will admit, though, that while I feel so blessed to have people in my life who care and are interested in my well being, I had too many visitors - it was nonstop from Tuesday through Thursday night - I was released Friday morning. The poor nursing staff still have to do their job even when there are so many people in your room (thank goodness for a private room) - so I could not fault the nurse who was questioning me about "passing gas" in front of our pastor..........I was horrified, and then I laughed, which hurt, which aggravated me...ha! The bad thing was, that up until that particular moment when that nurse asked me that embarrassing question, I had not passed any gas - lots of noises in my gut and so on, but no actual toots - so I had to answer in the affirmative......in front of the pastor.

good grief.
