My name is Ginger, I am 33 years old and here is my story.
I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids (small) about 2 years ago. I decided to do the "wait and see" procedure at first (which is my biggest regret in life). In the beginning there wasn't any noticeable change in their size, however, after a little over a year they doubled their size and began to cause problems.
I discussed further options with my doctor and decided to attempt a Myomectomy (I had decided to wait on having children... until I was "ready"). Before the surgery I also opted to take the Lupron Depot shots for 5 months... in hopes that the fibroids would shrink before surgery. I had read up on possible side effects of Lupron and was a little apprehensive, but decided chances were better if I tried it. I can say that in my case there were not any noticeable side effects from the shots, other than irritability.
My doctor was happy with the progress I was making (they were shrinking) and scheduled my surgery for Monday, January 8, 2001 at 8 AM. Going into the surgery I knew there was still the possibility that it could turn into a hysterectomy, but I kept my spirits high. Well, unfortunately the surgery did not go in my favor. My doctor had to perform a total hysterectomy (abdominal). There were too many fibroids and they were too far into the uterine cavity... they were also quite a bit larger than expected.
Other than the the idea of a hysterectomy... surgery went well, until about 6 hours later when my incision began to bleed heavily. I had begun to clot and this meant they had to re-open me (right in my room). In the end, the decision was made to leave me "open" (no staples). There were no further complications and I was sent home on the evening of Thursday, January 11th.
Well, here I am, 3 weeks into recovery and I have to say... other than the end result (no children)... the worst part of the whole ordeal has been the brief periods were I have no energy (slightly anemic) and getting my digestive system straightened out (which interrupts my sleeping patterns).
