Even my untrained eye could see the fibroids on the ultrasound. The doctor confirmed it; I had a fruit basket fibroids ranging in size from a grape to a large lemon.
This fruit basket caused 2-3 weeks of cramps each month, sometimes brought a gush of blood (not always) and generally made me feel heavy and dull. Two separate female surgeons recommended hysterectomy. The option just rang true in my gut as the right choice, especially after doing some research and looking in medical texts at what fibroids look like (gross!) I set the date – March 22, 2005.
Major anxiety leading up to surgery… sigh. I found much relief and laughter at the hystersisters site where I obsessed about every little possibility of things going wrong. Why don’t we obsess about all of the good things that can happen??
Got to the castle, checked in at 6am. Clock seemed to move backwards as I was processed. Finally got wheeled into pre-op area where I was told that my anesthesiologist was “tall, dark, handsome, and young.” Great – now I was worried about saying something entirely inappropriate and sexist under the influence of happy meds!
True enough, anesthesiologist was all that and more. Wowzie. Surgical nurse was lovely, and the surgeon rushed in, coffee in hand, saying, “let’s do this!” Pretty soon, I was feeling very happy and when wheeled into the OR it didn’t even bother me to be completely vulnerable – good meds!
Fast forward… my recovery room experience was not one I would want to repeat. I remember pain, and I remember the nurse telling me to stop moaning. I asked her why she didn’t believe me that I was in pain. I got more meds.
Finally, a lovely woman named Nettie removed me from the chaos of recovery and wheeled me to a private room with a view of our local mountain and waterway. Ahhhh. The morphine in the pca kept the main to a minimum but I was HOT. DH had to swab me down with cool cloths.
The nurses were absolutely fabulous and attentive. Could that be because of the chocolates DH had set out for them?
On day 2, I was up, had a sponge bath, ordered from the “liquids” menu, and moved off the pca to oral meds. I took some walks, some naps, and drank as much liquid as possible. In the early evening, I had a little “woozy” spell – almost fainted coming back from the potty. The nurses rushed in, checked vitals, and we all decided I just needed to rest. In the middle of my lovely nap, I remember DH quietly waking me. “Survivor” was on. He knows my priorities.
The surgeon had dropped in that morning to give me an update. Not only did I have the fibroids, but the weight and position of the fibroids had turned my uterus *sideways*! One ovary was “totally shot” (complex medical term, I know) and covered in endo. There was also an adhesion from my uterus to my rectum. In her words, “no wonder you felt crappy.” Well, she’s been around awhile and just says it like it is!
So, I’m left with just one ovary, which, with luck, will hold out until a natural menopause age… fingers crossed.
I was released on day 3 after having a shower and breakfast, and came home to weight down the couch. My only surprise so far is how irritating this STUBBLE is! It keeps getting caught in my undies – argh!
I’m being completely pampered by DH and by friends. Our 80 year old neighbor comes over almost daily to check on me. Isn’t she sweet?
This website was a godsend. I can say with 100% certainty that I would have cancelled my surgery and lived in pain had it not been for the knowledge that so many other women are out there experiencing the same symptoms, surgery, recovery, and life after hyster.
