My problems started in 1970 when in 8th grade. Almost overnight my hormones went crazy, heavy painful periods, breasts that would not stop growing and weight that kept piling on. No one thought this odd until age 25 when I woke up drenched in blood, scaring the daylights out of my husband! They doctors did tests and said they could find nothing. We tried and tried to get pregnant: again, more tests and findings...nothing. Finally, I got pregnant just on prayer alone at 27 and around six months into it they wanted to do ultrasound because they suspected twins! Well, I delivered not twins but a whopper of a baby girl with no complications. At 29 a large mass was noted on my left ovary. Fearing cancer I went into surgery and had it removed: an endometrioma weighing 18 pounds! (Okay, so I'm a fat girl and didn't notice the increase in waist size) Off and on for years after there was pain, bleeding, increased BP, no engergy until finally at age 43 they listened to me. I was hospitalized with severe anemia requiring 4 units of transfused blood and my heartbeats were skipping! The doctor finally said "You know, you're gonna need what we call a pelvic cleanout". I was ready. My surgery date was January 22, 2001. I woke with very little pain. The doctor told me that the endo was the worse he'd ever seen! He had to lift my entire bowel, search piece by piece for endo, clean it and replace. He removed my ovaries (a piece of the left one had been retained from the prior surgery and was just enough to start up another mass!) the tubes, the appendex but left the cervix because I'd lost a liter of blood already and since my cervix "sits low" in the vagina, he did not want to continue. There's no history of cancer in my family so it's fine by me to keep it! I'm home two weeks now and I have not had any major pain. I do not take the prescribed narcotic pain pills (in fact I walked out of the hospital with my daughter - the wheelchair was taking to long and two days was enough for me!) but a couple of Motrin before bed does the trick for the early morning stiffness. What I don't like about the surgery: The belly! Since I was fat prior to surgery, you can imagine how the vertical incision looks in the front: I call it "front butt" and I can't wait for it to deflate! Other than that, I feel glad to have it done. I can't take HRT but I have had no symptoms of sweats or flashes. I take a woman's supplement, drink lots of water and limit dairy due to gas pains. I'm glad I'm done!
