I have been a sister for almost two years now, but I thought I would share my story.
In 2002, I decided to get a tubal since I was through having kids and the pill makes me crazy. While in surgery, Dr. discovered a grapefruit sized cyst on my left ovary. She removed it and we thought that was the end of it. How wrong we were!
A couple of months post op I started having pain on the left side where the cyst had been. My Dr. just sort of patted me on the head and sent me on my way after complaing to her of the pain and finally going in to see her. I decided to switch Drs, and my new OBGYN told me that we could remove the ovary all together and do a uterin ablation while we were at it to cut down on the really heavy periods that I had been having. Well! after that surgery, all was well for a couple of months, then the pain came back to the left side and then in another couple of months, the bleeding was so bad from my peiods that I would go through a super plus tampon in less than 30 minutes. So, back I go to Dear Dr.! "Why don't we just do a TVH" she says to me! Okay, fine, by this time I will try anything!, So more surgery, bad reaction to Morphine, post op fever, extra 2 days in the hospital, I finally get out! Surely I am finished! It is all behind me right? WRONG! The pain comes back! I must be crazy! I have no ovary, I have no uterus, I have had all endometriosis, fibroids, adenomyosis removed from my body! I complain enough that I finally get her to do an US. They find something! So off I go for a CT Scan, there is a mass! I am not crazy! Now I have Ovarian Remnant Syndrome!
It seems that a tiny bit of ovary was left when it was removed and now is trying to function as an ovary. So in we go for surgery # 4! This time they do a laperotomy so that they can really clean me out. The revovery from this one was the worst! Since I was cut open, I am recovering very slowly, it is like a cesarian! The last surgery was in October 03, by April 04 I am in pain again. After running every test known to man, it is determined that I suffered nerve damage way back durring surgery #1 when the tubes were tied and the cyst was removed. So now, 2 years and 4 surgeries later, I go to the pain clinic where I am put on pain meds so that I may function.
The nerve damage was just one of those things that can happen durring any surgery. I do not regret the hysterectomy because I did have bad fibroids, adenmyosis and a prolapsed uterus. I did have a lot of financial fallout from having so many surgeries and my family suffered along with me. I feel luck that I can function as well as I do with my meds. I run a business from home, so I do not have to deal with a boss (except my husband) or a job that would not be understanding if I am having a bad day!
Thanks to hystersisters for being a wonderful sounding board and an invaluble source of information and support!
Thanks to all!
