Ask A Doctor

Hi all!

I've been back visiting HS site for a couple of days, but my brain was a little too foggy until today to post.

I had a TAH/BSO on 4/6 after a D&C identified Endrometrial Carcinoma. Oncologist suspects it may be due to the Tamoxifen therapy I've been on since breast cancer diagnosis in Dec 03.

The good news - I'm now dancing with NED! (No Evidence of Disease for those unfamiliar with this term).

Anyway, I woke up from surgery at 1:30pm (several hours later than expected). I immediately started to panic that perhaps they had found more advanced cancer than expected, and that was the reason for the more lengthy procedure. Good news, that was not the case. Well, turns out the doctor managed to nick the bladder during the procedure, so had to take extra time to do some repair work.

So, instead of getting rid of the foley the day following surgery as planned, I brought it home with me and have to keep it for almost 2 weeks. I was not a happy camper, but have since decided that as long as I can keep from getting an infection (I'm on antibiotics), I might as well look on the bright side - having the catheter in helps me from having to get up to pee in the middle of the night, even if I drink a lot before going to bed!

Stay at the castle was short (about 55 hours) and relatively uneventful. I did manage to pass out during my first walk (after about 4 steps), but I had nurses on each arm, so didn't hurt myself. (NOTE TO FUTURE PRINCESSES - don't try to walk on your own at first, and let them know immediately if you feel light headed!) I followed all the HS advice - lots of liquids, lots of walks, and the rest of the stay was much better than I had feared.

Other than feeling REALLY fatigued, I'm feeling pretty darn good. I've been going out on walks around the neighborhood for the last three days, and am feeling stronger every day. I have found that I'm having some difficulty reading yet (not able to concentrate). I hope that goes away as I wean off the pain medication, as reading is one way I was hoping to pass the time over the next few weeks.

Things I'm thankful for:
the belly band (abdominal wrap)
pillows to hug, especially for coughs & sneezes
good pain medication
health insurance
employer willing to let me off for 6 weeks
friends and family
all my HS friends for their sage advice, and the friendly post-op email!
