Ask A Doctor

My story starts with a visit to the GYN after I realized my uterus was prolapsing out of the vagina. Following an ultrasound, DR told me it was not prolapsed, but just felt that way due to an enlarged uterus and fibroids. So, after finding a urogynecologist who confirmed that there was a uterine prolapse, along with a cystocele and rectocele, surgery was scheduled for a date convenient for me. Luckily, I had no pain or excessive bleeding with the prolapses and fibroids so could afford to schedule three months out. I tried using a pessary but found it was extremely uncomfortable, so eliminated that option.

I was able to speak with the anesthesiologist at my pre-op and discuss my anesthesia concerns. He talked me out of going with an epidural, which turned out to be the right decision for me.

Arrived at the hospital at 6 am and was sent to the room to change clothes and void bladder. The nurse actually started the IV on the first try! Anesthesiologist, CRNA and uroGYN all came to talk with me and make sure everybody understood exactly what was being done. Later, I found out there was also an assistant GYN surgeon who helped with the surgery. Once it was time, the anesthesiologist told me he was going to give me something to relax now but not actually put me out until I was in the O.R. and positioned comfortably. That is the last thing I remember until the recovery room nearly 3 hours later. They removed the uterus, did a SPARC bladder sling, A&P repair with Pelvisoft mesh. DR said the needle from the sling repair punctured the bladder, but I've had no problems from that. She said it is fairly common situation to happen.

I was hooked up to the PCA pump and pushed it a few times, but really found I was having no pain. There was pretty significant pressure from the catheters and packing. I asked for something to drink and was given Ginger Ale with a straw. No rooms were available so I hung out in recovery for 2 hours.

The hospital puts all surgery patients in a private room, but it was still very noisy. Again asked for something to drink, but this time was told I could not have any carbonated drinks or use a straw following surgery. Thought that was funny after what I was given in recovery, but was very happy to get water. I drank 3 of those hospital pitchers of water that afternoon - I was terribly thirsty even with all the IVs going in. After getting little sleep due to the noise, the packing and foley catheter were removed early in the morning. I was able to get right up and use the toilet. I walked and walked and walked in the halls to get rid of the unbearably bad gas. I was belching so loud that all the nurses were commenting and laughing, but never did pass gas in the hospital. Unfortunately, I failed the voiding trial, so was sent home later that the first day after surgery with the suprapubic catheter still in. Once home, I was able to relax and better drain the bladder so the catheter was removed 3 days later.

7 days out, I have had no narcotics since the recovery room. I am virtually pain free from the surgery, although I do have some hip and back aches from being in the odd position for so long. I've taken Advil a couple times but have found it doesn't do much to relieve the back/hip pains. I found everyone at the doctor's office and hospital to be wonderfully caring and helpful. Other than the noise factor, I have no complaints regarding my care. I've coughed and sneezed since surgery and have had no leaks so I'm feeling very positive.

My wish would be that everybody could have as good an outcome as I've had. I really feel for those who suffer before and afterwards. Best of luck to all LIW who read this and gain some hope that they too will have remarkable recoveries.

Ashley
