January 31, 2001 I had surgery amounting to total hystorectomy as well as removal of ovaries and falopian tubes. After years of heavy and inconsistent periods the condition got bad enough that it started to affect my ability to do my work some days. Anyway, mentioned it to my doctor who examined me and sent me for an ultrasound. I had a very large fibroid inside my uterus. I was referred to my gynecologist(whom I had been to see during child bearing years). He agreed that perhaps a hystorectomy would be the best option for me (I am about to turn 51). We proceeded to arrange a lupron injection and start me on iron, since I was anemic from so much blood loss. I also had a cyst on my ovary(the second time that had happened). Two months later(and 4+weeks of bleeding) surgery was done. On the good side, I felt minimal pain from the surgery itself. I chose an epidural for anesthesia and enough medication to sleep through surgery. However, after surgery my hemoglobin dropped to 6 and I needed a post-op transfusion (2units). Still, my hemoglobin was then at 8.8, so I expect that I will feel some fatigue from that until I rebuild it. Also, blood in my pelvis formed into a hematoma (not large) and acted as an infection, so that although I went home from the hospital on the third day after surgery, I was readmitted the next evening because I had a high enough fever. I was in the hospital three and 1/2 more days. So now it has been about two and 1/2 weeks since surgery and I feel pretty well, except for a couple of things. The gas cramps are pretty extreme (I had a short bout of diarreah(forgive spelling) because of so many antibiotics). Also, I find that I have tenderness on my left side, near the waist and down. I thought I could feel the swelling there. It concerns me a bit, but I'm thinking that it is muscle healing. I do have back aches, mostly from sitting straight for too long, or standing still (when doing dishes, I feel like the faucet is much farther away). I am taking a walk outside each day now(this will be the fourth day), weather permitting of course (I don't want to fall). I took one trip down the cellar stairs to start a load of laundry. That same day, I made cupcakes for Valentine's Day and a roast beef dinner. Needless to say, my body gave me heck and I was not feeling great after dinner! So, it is good to know at least, that my body tells me when I'm getting carried away. I have not driven yet, maybe this weekend. I'm on Estratest HS, and as of yet, feel no particular differences because of it. Still having night sweats, but they are milder because of estrogen, I assume. Do have a bit of tackycardia, usually at night when I go to bed. I am on Zoloft, though, because of a panic attack due to a particular situation in November. Anyhow, that should help with controlling that symptom for me. That is my story, and I have to say, of all that I have looked up on the web, these shared stories have been the only place to have some questions addressed. It is comforting to know that others have or have had the same problems. I took eight weeks of sick leave, and then I go back to delivering the mail. I do quite a bit of heavy lifting, and I hope that it will not be a problem. Time will tell. Thank you for sharing, hearing me out and giving me a very comfortable place to express my concerns. Fern
