I am an African American Female w/no children. I have suffered horrible cramps and periods since I began having periods at the age of 12.

My most significan problems began in 1988 when I began having irregular periods (meaning, the periods would not stop...). It got so bad, I became anemic and my blood count was 5!!!!!!!! It is only the grace of God that I am here...Anyway, I had a routine GYN exam and was diagnosed with an abnormal pap smear. At that time, I underwent a biopsy, colposcopy and finally cryosurgery (freeze cervix), after that...I had no problems for almost 10 years!

In 1992, I was diagnosed with having fibroids...they were small and I was told I had nothing to worry about...However, the fibroids would be monitored. In 1997, I started having intense cramping and the fibroids started to grow...again, I was told nothing was alarming and the fibroids should be monitored...In October 2000, I started having abnormal bleeding, cramps, etc., To make a long story short, my fibroids had grown to the size of a 5 month pregnancy...after researching the options I chose the hystectomy.

My surgery was January 19. My experience was extremely positive. The hospital staff and my GYN were great. Immediately following the surgery, I woke up in recovery and felt GREAT! I had ABSOLUTELY NO PAIN!!!!!!! I was ready to go home the next day; however, I still had to show I could keep down solid foods and pass gas! I was discharged January 21!

I am 4 weeks POST-OP! I feel better than I have in YEARS! The hysterectomy was the best decision for me and I have absolutely no regrets! I jokingly tell all my friends who ask: I CELEBRATE THE REMOVAL OF MY UTERUS...PRAISE GOD, I HAVE MY LIFE BACK!
