Ask A Doctor

I had my surgery on May 3rd . I was anxious and overwhelmed at first when I find out I had some decisions to make in regards to my health. As I had fibroid tumors which were wrecking havoc on my body and health. Well I researched and asked others at my work that I knew had hysterectomy's for one reason or another. Well through this researching it gets a little scary at times and you might become unsure of what to do. My doctor gave me a month to do the research and also gave me her opinions but really it all came down to me. I knew I couldn't go on feeling so terrible and not being able to fit in my clothes. I had approximately 10 yrs till menopause even though I had experienced some perimenopause. Well they say sometimes your fibroids will shrink once you get to that point. Well I probably would have ended up with some major medical issues if i was to wait that long. So that pretty much made up my mind in regards to getting rid of the problem. Now it was the up to me if I wanted to keep certain other parts of my being. Well like I said everyone has their own opinion but for me I finally made the decision I thought was right for me. and I believe I made the right choice. I told my doctor that I would like to keep everything that wasn't damaged and causing me to be ill. She had informed me that I could still get cervical and ovarian cancer if I kept them but for me it doesn't run in my family and I didn't want to just start cutting things out just because I might get something. I wanted them to get the problem area out and get out of there. Well anyway when the day came I found I wasn't nervous at all . The hospital was very professional but also very upbeat and all the staff that were dealing with me were very courteous and took the time to answer questions and make me feel at ease and let me know what was going to happen. Anyway everything went good. They did find a cyst on one of my tubes they took out along with the uterus. Had a lot of adhesions . Ovaries were healthy and they took a little bit of cervix just for a biopsey. My doctor and everyone involved in my care were great. I did have a little nausea later that evening but they gave me more medicine for it. The biggest problem I had was with getting my bowels moving again. So gas pains were rough. But other than that my experience was great for having to have surgery and all. I have a great doctor and the hospital staff were wonderful so that always helps. Once you get home I just started getting bored after a week or so. I felt really good with more energy already. As far as sex goes I still felt like I wanted it. So of course I didn't follow doctors orders and wait six weeks but I wouldn't recommend not listening to your doctor. I didn't have any problems with it but we took it easy plus I got to keep my cervix so that might have helped. I think you should definately listen to your body. So anyway things aren't always as bad as people say they are. I think it depends on the person, doctor, hospitals, and your support group that make the experience and how it will turn out for each individual. Overall I have heard everyone say that when everything is done and said after time people are always feeling so much better than they did before the surgery. So good luck to you all and I hope everyone has the great fortune to have a surgery that went as well as mine did and accomplish exactly what it was suppose to.
