My story began in May 2004 when a large fibroid was discovered during my annual exam. The doctor explained my options and I chose to take the "wait and see" approach and have another ultrasound in six months. The ultrasound in November 2004 showed that it had grown slightly, but since I was getting ready to go on a Mexican Cruise at Christmas, I asked if I could wait another 6 months. The doctor agreed. So in April 2005, I had another ultrasound which showed it had continued to grow. My periods had become heavier and more unbearable. It was time to get this taken care of.

I am extremely fortunate to have a doctor who is very experienced with doing LSH's. Since my fibroid was pedunculated, which means it was attached to the outside of my uterus on a stalk, my doctor warned me that the stalk may be too big to remove via laparascopy. Therefore, I went into the surgery hoping for the LSH but bracing myself if it had to be done via SAH. As it turned out, the stalk was large and difficult to remove, but the doctor was able to get it out via the laparoscopy. Apparently, it was quite a challenge and he had to make one incision larger than the others to accomplish this. I am so thankful!

My experience at the hospital was a positive one. What really helped was all of the pre-admittance phone calls I received from the hospital. The last call I received the night before the surgery, the nurse explained everything that was going to happen from the minute I walked in the door...where I was going, what would happen, who would be there, what I would be asked, etc., etc. This really took away alot of anxiety because I had a clear understanding. There were no surprises. Between this information and all of the wonderful support I've received from hyster sisters, I felt well prepared to take on this challenge.

My recovery has been good overall. I have only experienced a couple negative things. First, I did have an allergic reaction to the pain meds, so I am covered in hives. But I am taking Benadryl which is helping. Thankfully, Advil is taking care of the pain so far. Secondly, the gas pains have been the biggest challenge. I'm so glad I heard about Gas-X from hyster sisters and the need for water, walking, water, walking...

I have been sharing with everyone how hyster sisters really educated, supported, and prepared me for this major surgery. I brought my Pamper the Princess tummy pillow with me to the hospital, so it was a great way to share about hyster sisters with the nurses and doctors. I am also using the Princess Wand to "summons" help from my caretakers. It makes bringing me water a little bit more fun.

I have also really appreciated the prayer support I've received from the other hyster sisters. It has meant alot to me. I entered that hospital on June 1st with a peace that only God could bring. Thank you...
