Well, here's my story. Went in on 6/9 for surgery, checking in at the ambulatory surgery area. Nurse checked me in, did my IV, then let my DH come back to wait with me (he could have come back initially, but he would have passed out during the IV!). Not too much of a wait (maybe 30 minutes) until they came with the cart to take me to surgery. Went to a holding area in the surgery suite where they gave me a dose of IV antibiotics and put the inflatable wraps on my legs (they would alternately inflate/deflate to keep the circulation going well in my legs while I was not moving around to prevent blood clots from forming). They felt a lot like a massage! Shortly thereafter the anesthesiologist came in to talk with me (had I had anesthesia before, any problems with it, open your mouth and say ah, etc). Then my doc came in to check to see if I had any last minute questions (none). A couple of minutes later I was wheeled across the hall to the surgery room, moved over to the table, got strapped on, covered with warm blankets, told I would start feeling very relaxed, then.....out. I do not remember the recovery room at all (unusual because in my previous 4 surgeries involving general anesthesia I had remembered being there). Next thing I remember was them telling me to move from the cart to the bed in my room. I remember asking if it was OK to lay on my side (they said yes), and I basically rolled over onto the bed and stayed in that position for a while. I was having a fair bit of pain and used my morphine PCA quite a bit at first. I was still having nausea from the anesthesia as well (never threw up, and after about the 3rd dose of anti-nausea medicine, it went away and never came back). I did not have a catheter in, so after a couple of hours I needed to get up. Because the nausea was still prominent at that point and I was a bit dizzy, they brought in the bedside commode. After that one time I was able to shuffle across the room to the bathroom, each time getting easier and with less assistance. Through the afternoon and night I did a lot of sleeping, getting up for the bathroom about every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. In the morning they switched me from the morphine (which I wasn't using much at all by that point) to oral ibuprofen, took off the leg wraps, and disconnected my IV. I was given clear liquids after my surgery, but for breakfast and lunch had full liquids. My doc came in around 1pm to see me (I had no vaginal packing so he just did a quick check of my tummy and asked questions). Since I was not nauseous, had lots of rumbling in my bowels (though no gas passing yet), he had them give me some solid food and said if I kept it down I could leave later that afternoon. So around 2:45 (took them a while to get a late tray up from the kitchen) I had a turkey sandwich, and was dismissed around 4pm. Came home, went straight to the couch (the ends recline), and went to sleep for about an hour. Had a light supper, a light snack later in the evening, and off to sleep I went again, getting up a few times in the night for the bathroom. Since then have just gotten better. Have not needed anything stronger than ibuprofen for the pain. Mostly just having a bit of discomfort, rather than pain, at this point (6 days post-op). Just have had light occasional spotting since surgery. Drinking plenty of water and taking gentle walks of increasing length throughout the day. I'm doing well at remembering my 10-pound weight limit (although it took about 8 trips with the gallon pitcher to water my flowers outside since I couldn't use my big watering can!). I'm looking forward to my kids returning in a couple of days. Will have a 4-week post-op check-up, and should be released to return to "normal" after that. So all-in-all a pretty easy time of it, just need to remember not to overdo myself during the recovery period. Hope all the rest of the ladies-in-waiting have an easy experience as well!
