Ask A Doctor

Here is my story.... first of all if you are a bit squeamish, please do not read this story. Overall I think I'm having a very good recovery, but had a few scares while in the castle.

On June 16th, my doctor proscribed the mag-citrate prep for me. She said it was the kinder, gentler version, which looked like a 10 ounce soda bottle, followed with a 8 ounce glass of gingerale. I chilled both and then mixed it together and drank it all. That stuff wasn't kind or gentle, in my opinion. I was up most of the night making bathroom trips, with the last visit happening just before leaving for the castle on the 17th.

My surgery was scheduled at 9:30 but was moved up to 7:30am. After showering, getting dressed, and grabbing my castle items bag, my DH and two daughters jumped into our car and drove to the castle. We arrived at the surgical unit at 5:30am, and after filling out the last of the forms, and swearing that I had had nothing to eat, or drink after midnight, I was given a gown, robe and a cute little pair of socks to wear. Then after taking vitals, we were all taken into the waiting room for our names to be called.

After waiting a while, I and a few other patients scheduled for 7:30 am surgery were taken into another room to sit on our gurnies. The anesthesiologist came by and set up my IV. Then he told me he was going to give me something called versed. I remember getting the versed but not much afterwards until I woke up in the recovery room. I remember commenting as I was getting the versed that I was wondering if this happy med would have me acting goofy like one of the actors on West Wing when he was being medicated for pain. Then my daughters told me that I got a serious look on my face and said, "Wow it works this fast?" And the anesthesiologist said, "Yes it does". After that apparently I continued talking about that episode, and then when they were wheeling me off to surgery, I hugged and kissed my DH and both of my DD and then cheerfully told them that it was a beautiful day and that they should change into capri outfits or short outfits. I have no memory of saying this to them.

I remember waking up in recovery, and one of the nurses asked me how intense my pain was on a scale of 1 through 10. I said about a 6 or 7. They gave me Morphine via a PCA pump, and showed me how to work the machine, then wheeled me to my room. Once in my room they transferred me from the gurney to my bed. That night I had a grabbing pain, that seemed to be underneath my right ribs, I think it was actually from the incicsion area and was radiating. By the next morning, I started noticing bruising around my incision. The doctors thought that I might have had a bleeder that spasmed and were keeping an eye on my hemagloben and hematacrit levels. By that morning, my hematacrit had dropped 2 points and my bruising spread out all across my abdomen and on to my hips. By day 2, my hematacrit dropped again, and by the start of the the third day, I had dropped from 22 to 15.8 and was also starting to run a low grade fever. I started recieving IV antibiotics every 6 hours and so much saline solution that I plumped up to about 3 sizes larger than I normally am. While my hematacrit was starting to drop, the doctors asked me if I felt dizzy. I did not. I was able to get out of bed, walk the halls, with no dizziness, however my pulse kept rising as did my heartrate. After watching my hematacrit and hemagloben drop, my doctors gave me to blood transfusions. Right after recieving the first transfusion, my pulse returned to normal, and my fever started to break. I was starting to feel alot better.

I was released from the hospital on June 21st, after I was able to urinate without a cathetor, and was able to pass gas on my own. I still hadn't had a BM, but by the evening of June 21st, I did.
I was released home with pain pills, antibiotics, ibuprofin, stool softeners, and iron supplements. I've only been home for 4 days and already my body has broken down alot of the bruising (hematoma). I'm still feeling tired at times, but I'm also feeling better each day. They told me that they found a surprise fibroid attached to my colon, and I'm glad that I did something about all these fibroids before they caused even more symptoms than what I was already suffering from. I went into the surgery with one last visit from Aunt Flo, that was by far one of the worse visits, but when I woke up, Aunt Flo was gone, and I haven't had any vaginal bleeding since. I already noticed that the pressure that I was feeling due to the huge fibroids is gone and the slight stress incontinence is also gone. I'm looking forward to recovering and feeling so much better than I used to feel.
