I wanted to share my story for the purpose of encouraging those about to embark on the wonderful voyage of "hysterville". My surgery was scheduled for 3/1/2001. I arrived there at approximately 7:30 AM and was taken to the "dressing room" right away. I tend to be a nervous nellie, however for some strange reason, I wasn't nervous at all. I later found out my daughter and her boyfriend had been praying for me to be "calm". After answering "50" questions, I was taken to a waiting room where I casually watched TV until the IV was put in. I did not receive anything to relax me, as I wasn't feeling apprehensive at all. The anesthest came in and told me he would like to give me an epideral which would numb me and I would only required enough anesthesia to make me sleep without waking. However, he told me he couldn't guarantee I wouldn't hear voices. Well, I didn't. Upon inserting the epideral, they wheeled me into the surgical room. I looked around, saw my doctor and told him this didn't look like any rooms from the "ER" show. After checking me several times to make sure I was "numb", the next thing I knew I was in recovery. Let me tell you, when I woke, I was wide awake!!! It was amazing. I wasn't sick, groggy, nothing. There was no pain, course remember I was still numb. The doctors kept the epideral in until the day after my surgery, when trying to get me up, I began to become nauseated. The nurse explained it was from the epideral. I had the epideral removed and proceeded with other pain management. After a couple of hours the nausea went away and I was able to go for a walk. I was in the hospital for three days and believe me, I was ready to go home. It really isn't that bad. I have found that the worse part of this ordeal is the recovery at home. I get bored, and I have started dealing with achy legs. I see my doctor on the 20th, so am planning on discussing with him. I have been put on hrt as everything was removed. My abdomena incision is healing, but I get very tired. I have tried going into work for a few hours, as I am only required to sit there. However, you can't imagine how tiring it is just to do that. Having been counceled by many good sisters on this site, I have come to understand that this is all expected. So, the moral of the whole story is, "it is easier done than said". You might hear stories of how painful it is. You might hear stories of how horrible the waiting is for the surgery. However, it really is different for everyone. As others have said, you need to listen to what your body is telling you. I have never heard a "hystersister" say, she is "sorry" she had it done. The same goes for me.
