I've just been reading over some of the sister's stories and thought it might be time to tell mine. Even though it's been a long time since my surgery,I think it will help me to remember how bad it was and to sort these last few years out.
Here's my story-
I was always very regular with my periods, from the day I started at 12. I never had unusual cramping or bleeding. Started on birth control pills in my late teens. Had 2 children, at 22 years and 24 years old, both c-sections.
Starting around 1990, at 31, I was diagnosed with fibroids. Had some heavy bleeding and clots, but nothing unbearable.
Slowly but surely, things began to get worse. After moving to a new area, and a few years later, I finally went to a doctor. Had ultra sounds done and finally a laparoscopy in August of 95.
They found tons of endometriosis. The doctor's words were"I can't believe you're even able to walk around!"
Went on Symmeral (sp?) nasal spray for 3 months prior to hysterectomy, to try to shrink the endo.
I was in severe pain the months prior to my hysterectomy. My DH would come home at night and find me in a fetal postion, not able to walk. The bleeding was also profuse. The first few days of my period, I would have to change my super tampons plus a pad every 15 minutes. The pain and periods controlled my life. Out of every month, I would have about 5 good days. My children and husband really suffered also.
Had my abdominal hysterectomy the begining of November in 1995.
I was told that my ovaries were attached to my uterus, my tubes could not even be found and that my bowel and cervix were also attached to my uterus. Part of my right ovary was saved(mainly because of my age) and my cervix was left.
My partial right ovary seemed to work fine, until 1996 when I started to have pain again. Ultrasounds revealed cysts.
I had another laparoscopy procedure the following year, with right ovarian cystectomy.
We discovered more cysts on the ovary in 1999 and was put on Depro-Lupron shots to try to reduce them. The largest cyst went from 9mm to about 51/2mm and then stopped.
Finally in October, of 1999, I had my right ovary completely removed plus some endo. Stayed on the Lupron for another 2months(for a total of 5 months). I must say, that for me, that was the worst!
Recovery was fine. The hospital staff was great, as were the doctors. Both times I was able to stay off work for more than the 6 weeks and had a caregiver for the first 2.
Since around February of 2000, I've been on 4 different hormones. I think I'm finally begining to feel balanced.
No matter what, it is much better than the endo pain. My quality of life is soooo much better.
