Hi, First of would like to say, glad I found you all, this site has proven to be one of the most helpful sites I have found regarding hysterectomy. Now, my story... Seems like I have had problems since about age 25, I am 34 now. I always had painful and heavy periods but about four months ago I experienced pelvic pain that just would not go away. Found a terrific doctor who did the appropriate ultrasounds and found two fibroid tumors, also said I had an exteremly tipped uterus. I had a Laproscopy done in Jan. nothing they could do about the tumors or the uterus being tipped, couldn't remove the tumors because the blood loss would be too great, couldn't suspend the uterus because the tumors were in the way! I knew a hysterectomy loomed in my future. In Feb. the pain on my right side (ovary area) increased and was now debilitating. I once again visited the doctor and they scheduled my surgery for March 21st. I was very nervous but did very well until I arrived at the hospital at 5:30 am, surgery was at 7:30 am. The ansthelogist came in to put the IV in and I just started bawling. I guess I just couldn't hold my feelings in any longer. I was not upset about loosing my uterus or ovaries, I have four children and already had my tubes tied, I was just plain scared! My husband came in and attempted to calm me down. Thankfully I didn't have long to wait until they wheeled me down to the holding area, I saw my doctor and spoke again to the ansthelogist. I had stopped crying but was on the verge of tears. I waited about fifteen mintues and then the ansthelogist came back and said they were ready for me, she put something in my IV and I thought it was just to relax me but that is the last thing I remember. I don't actually remembering waking up in recovery, I was in a huge fog and just couldn't shake it. I remember being wheeled into my room and made to move from one bed to the other, that was sheer torture. Once I got to the bed they gave me demerol in the IV and I was out again, that is how the day of my surgery went, mostly sleeping, shots of demerol in the IV, back to sleep. Day two they took the cathered out and demanded I get up and take a shower, which I did but it really was difficult. I was sore and hurting but most of all felt as weak as a baby. I couldn't pee at all and two hours after the catheter went out it went back in with instructions from my doctor to leave it in until the following morning. The nurse was good about it and she told me that sometimes the bladder needs more time to wake up from surgery, she was right, by the next day when they took the catheder out I could pee on my own just fine, I was very very relieved. They also took my IV out late on day two, it was causing my hand to swell up badly and really hurt too. My pain was not untolerable but I was sore and hurting. My doctor told me that the uterus was what he expected, two tumors, and it was tipped back so far it was full of blood and had no hope of being able to drain, but the surprise was the right ovary, it was clear on lap surgery in Jan, but when he did the TAH/BSO the right ovary was full of bloody cysts, he said that is why I was hurting so much the last five weeks! I didn't want my ovaries removed at first because I was terrified of being on HRT and also of having all of the menopause symptoms but honestly I am glad I gave him permission to remove them. I am feeling pretty good, I am 9 days post op, I tire easily and am still sore, sneezing is absolute torture! I look forward to a speedy recovery and feeling super again! GOod luck to everyone!
