I had a total abdominal hyster on Oct 10, 05. Got out of the surgery center in little over 24 hours. Today I'm sore but so glad it's over. Here's my story.
I am now 50 years old and have battled with fibroids since I was in my 30's. That is when hysterectomy kept coming up at dr. appts. But lately I started bleeding very heavily and twice have been so anemic that blood transfusions were considered. I went on a Nuvaring Birth control for a year and did it so I did not have periods. Wasn't bad but spotted a lot. Then I did a nuvasure ablation a month ago. During the D&C that preceeded the procedure it was discovered I had some atypical complex hyperplasia cells on a polyp. I went to my own gyn as well as a oncologist who both suggested a hyster. They couldn't do a vaginal as my uterus was too large and couldn't be cut due to the possibility of cancer. Two days before the hyster I started my period and it was kind of heavy considering I'd had an ablation. The surgery day came and I was very nervous. I had it done at a surgery center instead of hopsital and they were very nice and patient. I talked to my doctor before the surgery and told her I wanted to keep my ovaries unless there was a clear reason to take them out. She tried to talk me into taking them due to the possibility of the atypical cells being more and because I'm nearly 51. But, I do think that natural hormones are better if there are choices so opted to leave them. She took a cyst off one but did leave them. I'm still waiting the pathology report and hoping it comes back clean. Don't remember much about recovery but really wasn't in a lot of pain. Started a morphine pump when I got to my room and it managed my pain well. The first time I got up ( about 6 hours after surgery) I did get a little naseous but they quickly gave me something for that which put me right to sleep. The next morning I had the pump until about noon -- switched to oral and was back home by that evening. Today I'm sore but really surprised it's not as bad as I'd imagined. I don't think anything is ever as bad as imagined. Doing well so far and want all the hyster sisters to be to know there is nothing to fear. Thank you to this site for preparing me so well for the surgery. In fact, nurses asked me if I'd ever had abdominal surgery before because I seemed to know what to do. It's because of the hours I spent on this site preparing. Thank you for the great information.
