Hi Sisters,
I knew 3 months in advance that I was going to have a TVHw/bladder repair, keeping my ovaries. My uterus and bladder were "falling out" and knowing I wasn't having any more children we decided that at 37yrs old & very healthy, now was the time before an emergency. We worked my surgery around my DH's vacation. He wanted to take care of me my first week. I found this website early and read a lot of post. It took me a while to post but meanwhile I got a lot of good information here that eased my fears. I want to thank all you sisters for sharing and caring. The support is very helpful. So, here is my story. My DH and I had our surgery meeting with my "sweet" doctor about a month before the scheduled date. I felt very confident that my doctor would take very good care of me. I had my blood work done 4 days before surgery. I was going to have general anesthesia knowing I could wake up sick. I almost had a spinal but prayed about it and I feel the Lord guided me to the general. I have back problems that come and go, so our Lord knows best. The day before surgery I was on a clear liquid diet and ordered to rest. I had to be at the hospital at 9:45am. I put the "lovely" gown on and waited. I went to the holding room, was given a hat, had my IV put in with an antibiotic drug too. No shaving for me - YES. I saw my doctor "Mr. Smiles", and then went to sleep at 11:45. I remember trying to wake up after I was in my room. I was moving and listening but my eyes would not stay open and any movement of the bed or my DH twirling my hair really bothered me. I did have some pain and I managed to find the pump button. It worked good for me. The pump was gone by 9am and they gave me a pill instead. Lipitor? The worst thing was waking up. It took me 26 hrs. to wake up. The "very nice" nurses got me sitting up and then I lost my cookies. I got out of bed, washed my face, brushed my teeth (couldn't wait), and ventured down the hall. Just a short one but from there I was on my way to waking up. I had the best room ever!! I had no room mate because I was put on the children's wing. How nice it was to walk down the hall and see the colored pictures and decorations. My nurse had a really cute shirt too. It was so peaceful. So, by 3pm I could hold my eyes open. My doctors associate came in to see me, (my doc had to go out of town for the weekend), and reassured me that if I didn't feel up to going home tonight that I could stay one more night. He ordered an enema to move things, but it really didn't effect me. I got to eat a light meal by 5 and when 7pm came I was ready to go home. Now I had to learn how to get around with my catheter & "bag". It wasn't too bad. The only discomfort I was experiencing was the pressure down below while sitting. I never had any bleeding, just minimal discharge. I take 600mg of Motrin about twice a day and that seems to be working just fine. I was able to move my bowels the next day and I am taking a stool softener. The gas monster came around but the GasX works great. The first week all I did was hang out on my couch, chat with visitors, WALK, eat and sleep. My father and his wife dropped off a meal and a few friends did the same during the week. My sister came up from FL. for a few days. She cooked for us and we had a nice time. My hubby and Claire took real good care of me. She is a nurse so she had the honors of taking my catheter out on Thursday. We went to the doctors to void and my residual was fine so I went home with out another catheter. But....by 7:30 that evening I had to call my doctor. He sent me to the emergency room. I had 1300 cc's in my bladder!! In went another catheter for 5 days. Now Tuesday came and my friend Debbie (who also is a nurse) took my catheter out and 3 hrs later my in-laws took me to my doctors. I did much better this time. I tried not to "over drink", I really am a big drinker, and made myself pee every hour. It worked. Now it is much more comfortable walking and sleeping. I am up to walking 3 times a day for 20 minutes each walk. I am behaving, letting my "Men" (I have 3 sons too), do everything. I go to my doctor in 2 weeks for my 4 wk check. I plan on going back to work after 5 full weeks of recovery. I am a house cleaner and my DH plans on working with me the first week back. He is the best!! Thanks for "listening" and best wishes for all who are going in for surgery or are still recovering. I will post on the "Post-Op" site for my future weeks ahead.
