Ask A Doctor
I went for years not knowing that my heavy bleeding (throwing clots - sometimes brown-tinged leakage) with terrible cramping was not normal. I thought every woman went through this!
Until the last couple of years!
That's when I went to K-Mart and bled so bad that blood was pouring down my legs. My cramps became so bad that I would be doubled over - and sometimes vomit.
I also met a woman who began to talk with me about PCOS. She thought I had already been diagnosed! The more she talked - the more it sounded like my problems.
I finally made an appointment with a GYN (because all of my annual paps were done by my GP). The GYN did all sorts of tests and I had a terribly painful biopsy (she used a tool like a wire whisk and scraped the inside of my uterus for a couple of minutes). When she got the results back - she sounded condescending - but suggested that I could try medications to help alleviate my symptoms until I went through menopause (I was 49 at the time and diagnosed with adenomyosis, endomyosis, large uterus, fibroids/cysts on my ovaries, uterus and cervix). I was afraid that if I had a hysterectomy - I would become incontinent. This GYN did not discuss anything about incontinence with me.
I tried alternatives to hysterectomy (meds) and they helped a little - but not enough. My symptoms kept getting worse and I needed to keep changing my meds to keep up with my symptoms. I thought "this is no way to live!"
I went to see another GYN. Had all of the tess re-run (except NO biopsy). This GYN said that I could continue to try meds - but the only relief would come from having a hysterectomy (and I could wait to have it done). This GYN was not condescending - and we talked about my fear of incontinence and how a TVT and enterocele reduction would help prevent incontinence. We also talked about ERT after surgery (something the other surgeon didn't discuss with me).
I had my surgery on July11th with surgeon #2. I am still having pain, but I am so happy that I made this decision. I look forward to feeling more "normal".
