Ask A Doctor
I am 6 weeks post-op, and finally cleared by my doc to resume all normal activities. My story started with increasingly heavier periods over the last 2 years, lasting longer and longer. When I was bleeding for 10-12 days at a time and going thru umpteen tampons/pads a day, I went to my regular MD. He prescribed Seasonale, which did not agree with me at all. I went to a recommended OB-GYN, and he put me on a combination of Aygestin, Spiroldactone and heavy-duty Motrin, which I stayed on for about 9 months. The meds shortened my period to about 8 days, but not much lighter, and still much pain. He recommended a TVH for heavy bleeding, and uterine prolapse.
Went in on June 5, 2006 early AM. I was undressed, gowned, tagged etc. in pre-op, but they forgot to give me any relaxation drugs, so I went into the OR cold-turkey. But the anesthesiologist was very kind, and knocked me out quickly. I remember nothing, including recovery, until maybe an hour after getting to my room. I was very, very sick from the anesthesia and drugs, and my blood pressure kept veering south into the "is-she-still-with-us" territory, all throughout the night. Oh, and the doc discovered once he was in that I had horrible endometriosis and that had affected my left ovary, so he removed it, but left the right one intact.
But, I had almost no pain as long as I kept pressing the button every hour or two, and a cathether helped me sleep most of the night. Went home by 11am the next day and slept, slept, slept for about 2 days. I was extremely swollen in my face and limbs, still nauseous and just plain exhausted, but still no pain, due to an excellent combo of Vicadin and 800mg Ibuprofen. Came out of the swelling, nausea and tiredness about 5 days post-op, and have been mending very well since then. Have not had one hour of pain, maybe occasional slight discomfort. Had an exhaustion relapse at 3 weeks post after feeling great at 2 weeks post. Went back to office job P/T 4 weeks post and F/T at 5 weeks. Feeling WONDERFUL, and I was so much more informed and so much less anxious and scared because of all the terrific information and support from all my sisters here!
