I was told two weeks after my father died of cancer that I had carcinoma in situ of the cervix, with possible endo and cysts on my ovaries. After my ultrasound, it was decided that I would have a TAH and keep my ovaries. My boyfriend was naturally upset, since he and I had discussed wanting babies. I had a very difficult decision to make: do what's best for me or make him happy. Naturally, I did what was best for me, even at the risk of losing Mr. Wonderful.
My surgery was scheduled for first thing in the morning on Thursday, Oct. 5. My boyfriend was with me in the room when the doc and I discussed the procedure. My boyfriend then got the reality shock of actually hearing my doc talk about removing my cervix and uterus. I don't think it was a reality to him until that time, and he emotionally pulled away from me again.
I opted for a spinal morphine before surgery, since is being recommended more and more, and I'm so glad that I did. My IV was started, and the last thing I remember was the nurse telling me to sit up so they could give me the spinal injection. I don't remember getting all the way up.
I woke up in my hospital room, but that's still a blur. I remember asking for ice chips and being given some. I remember being instructed on how to use my PAC pump, and having my catheter bad being emptied. My boyfriend, mom and aunt were there, but my boyfriend left to take a nap and other stuff. That first 12 hours is a blur, but I didn't sleep much at all that night, and sat up and chatted with the night nurse a lot.
By 1:00 a.m. I felt that I just HAD to get up, so, with the nurse's help, I dangled my legs. I pushed a little farther and actually stood up! I was a bit wobbly, but I had NO nausea at all, and after only a few moments I actually started to take a few steps.
An couple of hours later, about 3:30 a.m., my nurse hooked my catheter bag to my IV stand and we went for a walk down the hall. At 5:30 I begged him to take out the catheter and he did. I then walked down the hall some more.
My IV became blocked at 7:00 a.m. and was removed. That was the worst part, getting the pain in control from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. when they finally gave me oral medication for the pain. By 9:45 I was on top of it again, and was feeling great. I had a few visitors and took a few cat-naps. The day nurses were not as great as the night nurses, but you take what you can get, I suppose.
I walked a bunch, chatted on the phone a bunch. I finally got to eat some crackers at 9:30 the night after my surgery. But 10:30 I got to eat a tuna fish sandwich! My boyfriend and I had a major discussion earlier in the evening about our future, and I basically told him that if having children is THAT important to him, then he and I should seriously reconsider our relationship, because I can not have them unless we have a surrogate or adopt. A couple of hours later he called me backand said he loves me, only wants to be with me, and we worked it all out. The nurses let him sneak in after hours with me, and we laid together on the hospital bed, ate and watched the Tigers on TV.
I was released the next morning, but had to wait for the boyfriend to come and get me after work!
I've been staying at his mother's house with my mom to keep me company and help me out, but I feel GREAT. I am not in much pain at all.
The WORST part of the entire experience is that my 2nd bowel movement decided it was going to come while I was being transported from the hospital to my boyfriend's mother's house! I had taken a stool softenener and some Milk of Magnesia in hopes that I could clear before we left, but after 2 hours of trying, it was not to be. I BARELY made it to the house before I virtually exploded into the toilet! I know, that's way too graphic for most people, but I had the tummy cramps, sweats, and was almost POSITIVE that I was going to poop my pants!
I'm wearing normal clothes, going for walks with my dog, and feeling great.
I wish everyone else the most speedy of recoveries. Had it not been for Hyster Sisters, I would not have been NEARLY as informed or confident. I attribut a lot of my success to this site, and would recommend it to anyone ever considering a hysterectomy. I constantly recite information I gathered from here, and my doctor says he's now going to share this site information with his patients considering the procedure.
Thanks again, and best of luck!
