I'm new here, but I wanted to tell you my story. First of all, I'm 48 years old. I had my hysterectomy in August of 2000. My experience was a positive one in many respects...at least as positive as it can be when one has this type of surgery.

For 18 months or so leading up to my surgery, I was in and out of my gyno's office complaining of abdominal pain. He did uterine ultrasounds, abdominal cat scans and all that but the tests showed nothing. I had no vaginal discharge. So he would end up putting me on anti biotics. The pain would go away, but 4 or 5 months later, it would return.

Finally, last August, I got really sick. My fever jumped to 103 and my regular doctor referred me to a NEW gyno...a woman! Yes! So I went to see her that day, gave her my past history, and she told me that she was going to admit me to the hospital and find out exactly what was wrong. The tests she ran were inconclusive and she said she wanted to do exploratory surgery. I agreed. As it turns out, when she re-opened my c-section incision, she found my entire abdominal cavity full of pus. She said it looked like someone had poured a gallon of school glue in there. My uterus, ovaries, bladder, cervic and colon were all "stuck" together. She called in another gyno and an gastroenterologist to help her with the surgery.

She removed my uterus and ovaries but left my cervic because my bladder was adhered to it and removing it would have meant even more extensive surgery. At one point in time she thought the gastroenterologist might have to do an colostomy...but thank goodness that didn't happen. I was in the hospital a total of 9 days. She wouldn't let me go home until my fever subsided which was on the 8th day. The nurses were wonderful to me! Very compassionate and considerate.

Anyway, it's been 9 months now since my surgery. Now I'm at the point in the road where I have to decide about HRT. I haven't been taking it because I haven't been having hot flashes. My bone scan showed very healthy bones.

That's one reason why I'm here at this website. It was recommended by a friend. I need to know that there are other women out there who have experienced what I have and can offer encouragement when I need it.

Thanks!
(By the way, my registered name is Saranne but everybody calls me Sara....)
