Ask A Doctor

Hi from Sydney Australia.
I had my TVH on Monday Dec 11th. Have been thinking about a hyster for a few years, I'm 33 yrs old. DH and I have been together 15yrs and have decided we are not having children. Over the years I have increasingly been having bleeding problems and have developed hormone induced migraines. These came on every time I had to have a bleed when I took the week off the pill. Some time ago I suspected this and took a few years off the pill, I had to go back on because of 13 day long periods. When I was younger it was only 8 days, obviously getting worse with age. I had to go back on the pill to control it. These days alI I got from a bleed was a raging migraine, black sludge, mucous blobs, blood clots and the occasional piece of meat (sorry, TMI). It was gross and I was sick of it.
I had a checkup and asked my gyno about the possibility. As he also found a polyp and he was happy to do a hyster for me. At my age I was keeping my ovaries. 6 days ago after months of freaking out it was over.
The hospital experience was great. I had an epi with light sedation. Don't remember a thing and would definitely reccomend the epi.
After I woke up I felt generally good. I had four tubes hanging off me! Nasal air, pca epidural button, canula drip and catheter golden handbag. My belly felt like a had really bad cramps, a pethidine pca on my epi helped. The next morning was better. They took out my catheter after breakfast, didn't hurt a bit! Soon enough I had to pee. Sitting up immediately got me dizzy and sick, so I had to use a bed pan. The next time I could not convince myself again that it was ok to pee while in bed, so I had to get up. Got dizzy again but had to persevere because I really needed to go! Promptly threw up my breakfast. After I had finished throwing up I wryly looked at the nurse helping me, held out the bag and said 'you can have your breakfast back'. She laughed. I felt better and managed to shuffle very gingerly to the bathroom, was surprised at how weak I was. Rapidly got stronger. Spent the day watching TV.
Morning two I felt better again, just felt like too many situps. Still returned my breakfast, turns out it was the pethidine. This day a migraine hit me due to my hormones being shocked from the operation, got some hot flushes as well. Tramadol is great stuff! Spent the day bumming around in bed and going to the bathroom as they were still pumping iv fluids into me because of the throwing up. Later that day the epi was removed and I got a shower. Day 3 breakfast finally stayed down and the canula came out. Late that night appetite finally started to return, until then I was forcing food down. The next morning I was released, yay!
DH was waiting for me when my car arrived and ushered me into bed. He's been quite firm about my remaining there most of the time and not doing anything the least bit harmful, he's a sweetie.
DH is off to work tomorrow but his DS has arrived to babysit me. Until my internal stitches stop bleeding I am adamant that I will rest and behave. Difficult when I really feel quite good, I have to keep reminding myself. I do wear down fast. I got up this morning and was standing for 35 mins when I had to go rest again. Afternoon naps are a must. It's only week 1, got 5
more to go.
I have found Hystersisters an invaluable resource for asking all my questions and making decisions, like having the epi. I'm sure I will find plenty of other questions to ask before I'm done. It has been great knowing you are all out there with the backup and support.

Thank you Sisters!
