I had my TVH (kept ovaries) on May 22, 2001 at the age of 36. I was actually excited as I had dealt with chronic back pain, pelvic pain etc. for 8 yrs, the last year daily, no break from pain ever. The surgery lasted only 1 hour, general anesthesia. I had bearable pain after, reminded me of back labor. The best thing I used for pain was a reheatable hot pack. I have significant allergies to most narcotics so I knew I'd have to use as little as possible. I did meet with some resistance from the nurses about microwaving the hot pack but my mom and DH insisted and it worked. I only had the catheter 8 hrs and had no trouble getting up, pottying, walking etc. I went home in 24 hrs, no bleeding and no spotting. I realize now this is not the norm. I think the positive attitude going in helped the most and the research I have done over the years. I have not experienced any emotional difficulties and have recovered really well. I am normally very active and it's been hard to stay down, but I am, I don't want to mess anything up. I feel so good it's hard to believe. Wish I had done this sooner!! It took this long to deal with the idea of no more opportunity for more children (I have 2, girl age 12 and boy age 9) and letting myself have the time to do it and recover with out worrying so much about the effect on everyone else. The best suggestion, (other than the hotpack and simethicone tablets for gas) is to have someone clean your house. It's an extra expense but well worth it. Friends who brought food were also terrific. Freezing things ahead would work too. That was my goal but I ran out of time. I am a school nurse and was busy finishing out the school year(ended May 18th). The best thing for me is I have 12 weeks off work but only 2 weeks off "mom duty". I am planning to drive at 2 weeks post op and think it will be fine. I have been out to dinner twice and to get a hair cut across town and to the library. I did not drive however. I hope this gives some good positive outlook to some of you. I feel great and know over the next few weeks/months I will feel even better. It seems like vaginal surgery is the way to go if you can. My uterus was only a 10 week size so it worked for me. I did not opt for supracervical as I had fibroids extending into the cervix and a history of dysplasia in the past. Good luck to anyone approaching surgery. Stay positive and be prepared. Knowing what to expect really makes a difference!
