I had my LVH on Feb 5,2007. My experience was totally positive and I am feeling better each day. I had a fabulous surgeon and team at a teaching hospital in a nearby major city. My prep was on Superbowl sunday and we now refer to that day as Superbowel. The prep was dulcolax overnight, 10 ozs of mag citrate with 7up and the 8pm enema. I felt fine. Pre-op I met my team, and was only stuck once for my IV. An interesting note for all of the sisters. Take the time to shave your legs and armpits and your pubic region before surgery. The team was very complementary of my smooth skin. apparently most woemen don't care how they appear pre-op, but I did. got to keep my ovaries, as I am only 42, and my Dr. felt it was a smart idea and I agreed. When I woke up in post op, i felt only a little pain, but had a laught because there was still a little surgical tape on my right eyebrow, so when the nurse took it off I said, oh youre waxing my eyebrows too? we had a laugh. When they took me to my room the nurse put this wonderully warm relaxing massage boots on my feet. They felt great. I slept well and only had to use the morphine a few times. My DH stayed with me and when I went to getup the next AM after they took the cath out(no pain) I had a lot of nausea. Even though U was given medicine in my anasthesia to prevent it, I still got nausea. Luckily I remembered spearmint lifesavers and they helped. I stayed two nights in the hospital and was treated very well. When we did leave, we had an hour drive home and I dozed most of the way. just a note to the sisters who may have had Lasik. I had my lasik two years ago, and it took me three full days for my eyesight to focus clearly. My Dr. said it was from the anasthesia. My sight is perfect again.
My recovery went well until the 5th day, and I developed a fver if 102 and started to bleed heavily.I was diagnosed with a secondary infection and went on a very strong course of antibiotics. At my three week check my Dr. ordered blood work and a pelvic cat scan. My white count was high. She was concerned that my ovaries were failing. They did not. However, the barium(yuck) took three days to get out of my system. total weight loss is 10 pounds and i wasn't even trying. My appetite is so small now, its so funny. I feel better each day and am slowly easing back into life. I do believe that the LVH gave me a new outlook on life...certainly one with less pain. A final note... My first two opinions were TAHBSO, but I went with the Dr. who did my LVH and I am so pleased. Don't get cut if you can help it.
