Ask A Doctor

I had never had any problems with my periods - every 28 days I had a medium flow 3 day period. Like clock work. No cysts, tumors, endo, infection or even really cramping. Until I had my son...

I began having problems in my pregnancy at 25 weeks. I started having some bleeding and passing small clots. Even a few irregular contractions. My doctor assured me I was fine - to let him do the worrying. After numerous doctor visits, ER trips & 3 ultra sounds - I decided I was paranoid and I should listen to my doctor.

At week 31 I awoke to a weird feeling and thought I maybe needed to go to the bathroom. I stood up and passed a grapefruit size blood clot and then the blood kept coming. My husband rushed me to the hospital. My nurse said I had lost a lot of blood and she believed it was placenta abruption. She called my doctor and told him. He said he was confident it was not abruption and to try to stop the labor - I was already dilated to a 5. This was at 1 am. By 7 am my labor was not stopping and it was in fact progressing plus I had developed preeclampsia and our baby's heart beat was in distress. Finally at 9 am - after the doctor showered, had his coffee and made it to the hospital - he did an emergency c-section. My son was born not breathing, was recessatated and put on a ventalator. Our little ~ Miracle ~ is now almost 2 and still can not swallow because of the brain damage. During the surgery, my doctor left a huge piece of placenta in me that I passed 6 weeks later - with labor like cramping and again, a lot of blood. This was again, after I had called the doctor numerous times and was assured what I was feeling was normal. After passed the placenta. I spend a night in the hospital was treated and released.

But this began a huge stream of infections - vaginal & urinary. Plus growths in my rectum which had to be surgically removed. I started having panic attacks during my periods and had to take xanex to keep myself calm. I was constantly afraid I would start bleeding uncontrollably. I didn't believe the doctors anymore when they told me I was okay. I can't even begin to explain how I felt emotionally. As if that wasn't enough, I began developing tumors and my uterus prolapsed. More bleeding and cramping....... more xanex.

So when my NEW doctor advised he would need to remove my uterus and left ovary - I was estatic. I was so afraid of having them in me any longer that I thought that was the best news. It was an easy decision for me. After the problems we had had with my pregnancy and our son we knew we'd never take another chance - as it would risk both my life and the baby's.

I am now 3 1/2 weeks post op and am so happy I had this done. I feel Free!! No more cramping or periods or being afraid I might gush blood uncontrollably...... and yes, no more xanex.

Sorry this is so long. I had to get all that out!
