My hysterectomy was voluntary. I was urinating frequently. It was several times an hour. On a date, I would have to have my boyfriend stop at a restaurant so I could use the facilities. I thought I was ready for Depends. I go to the gyn. biannually, but he never noticed a prolapsed uterus. He explained that it is pressing on the bladder causing the need to void. He told me the solution was a hysterectomy. This would also end spotting and sporadic night pelvic pain. I decided that as long as I have good insurance, I should proceed. I went into the hospital Dec. 1, 2000. My dear boyfriend (DB) took me, stayed for the surgery, visited daily and subsequently took care of me at home.
I was to have a VH but woke with the news that I had a AH. A large fibroid prevented the former. I had wanted the ovaries removed as well so as not to later need more surgery. I had a normal experience at the hospital. I walked the second day with the catheter and was feeling OK. I think I stayed until Tuesday. I was bedridden through December. At the six week checkup, my doctor said I could return to work. I did and like other sisters was fatiqued. I continued working, but took it easy. However, I felt it was time to retire and did so at the end of the school year. I am not so fatigued for which I am grateful. I am happy that my bladder is now normal, and I can go ahead with the next phase of my life--what to do with the rest of it.
