Hello Hyster Sisters:

I am so excited to see this site for hysterectomy support, I wished I had seen it prior to my surgery, but I am glad to be here now. Well I am on day number 19 post op of total removal of the uterus (ovaries still in place). I just wanted to share my story, that from age 9 when first experiencing a period, I didn’t think much of the cycle thing. It worked well except for a few moments in my teen years where I had to take hormones to get it back on track. I had two successful deliveries, vaginally with no drugs. Following three weeks of delivery I was back in routine. So, going into the ideal of a horizontal TAH, I never conceived it would be different. Now I say God bless those who endure epidurals, and caesarian deliveries.

Going nearly 44 years (celebrating birthday 07/21 ) of never having any type of surgery, I had lots of fears. I am happy to say that I overcame just about all of them. I have more compassion for others who had hysterectomies before me. Dealing with high blood pressure issues, I discovered I was severely anemic. Hemocratin levels were very low. I was immediately referred to OB/GYN, as with changes in job had not seen one in nearly 7 years. Immediately upon examination, Dr. stated I had fibroid tumors and seem to be multiple, but couldn’t tell until following ultrasound. The question Dr. asked was “did I realize I had fibroids.”
  • Shortness of breath going upstairs and sleeping at night (due to anemia)
  • Extremely irritable (due to anemia)
  • Having to take a nap following my morning workout and before going to work
  • Losing weight, but everything, I wore made me look maternal show a bulging stomach
This was a red flag for me and then when discussing with my family and friends, I felt like the 9 year old all over again discovering my period. I was shocked to see how so many women deal with this, but never discussed until I informed everyone, that I was planning on getting the hysterectomy. I cried for a while about it.

Later, after discussing this with my Bro who also is a Dr, he reminded that we had family members who died with cervical and ovarian cancer, so I was to be grateful to have a Dr. detect this early. If you call 5 golf ball size tumors invading my uterus early so be it. So when should I haven known something was was wrong. I practice abstinence, so sexually could not tell. I would go through a pack and ½ of sanitary napkin per month, so much flooding. And when chatting with friends about it, they would say things change after 40. So I thought this was one of them. I was working out so much and the trainer was targeting my abdominal areas, but no result. Other wacky things that I thought were just a part of getting older,

I later learned my uterus was the size of a 5 months' pregnancy. I am grateful today that I was not stubborn as usual and addressed this problem. I am grateful to have a caring OB/GYN who was willing to answer all my demanding questions. I wanted to know why I couldn’t have laser surgery like my friends. I thought a cut to the abdomen was antiquated. I learned due to the size of my uterus, vaginal or laser was not my option. I am grateful to have support from my friends and church members. I am extremely disappointed in my own younger old sisters (38 & 40). Although they live close by they haven’t visited me and don’t see the need. Those emotional feeling is what lead me to this site. My DM assured me that this procedure is no different than giving birth, just to a uterus of a month pregnancy. I wanted to be sure I wasn’t making more of my experience than what it was. I had a slight relapse and injured myself internally because I was active too soon. More bed rest and prescribe medicines, and I am now behaving and taking my time to recover. I guess my hormones are getting the best of me, being emotional about my sisters’ behavior. But I am thankful to you HysterSisters for having this site and allowing other to share their stories. I know that I am not alone , It really means a lot to me.
