I had my total hyst on May 8th. I was nervous to go in and the hospital was 4 hours late getting to me, but I finally came through surgery and recovery. Having had two children by c-section, I had already started the surgery for him. Luckily, my incision didn't change much at all. Gosh, I was sore when it was over. I couldn't hardly get myself out of bed. I am really happy for all I have read about people brushing teeth, taking showers and walking up and down halls, but that was not my story. I used a bed pan and a trapeze hung above my bed for greater ease in movement. I didn't shower or brush until I got home. As the new mothers went up and down the halls with their new pretty babies, I cried a lot. There was this one nurse, Natalie, who made all the difference for me. She sat with me, hugged me, told me I could do it -- and you know what, I could. I think after major surgery, you lose the trust you had in your body to do what it is supposed to do. Not to mention the fatigue factor. I got home. I showered. I walked up and down MY hall and generally have never felt better. I am still sore and tired, don't get me wrong. But intrinsically, systemically, I feel better than I have in 3 years. The HRT started in the hospital has kept any menopausal symptoms at bay and I have to say, I should have done it a lot sooner! I must say though, no princesses in this house--I'm a single mom with two young teenagers. I have done everything for and by myself. You can do it too! I am so relieved: that it's over, that I feel good, and that I am beginning to trust my body again!
